    Black Patch

Hi. Your best bet would be to get in touch with Ted Rudge, who is an authority on Romany Gypsies and the Black Patch.

    Alex's Pie Stands

Thank you for an interesting insight into the ALEX pie business. Tell me, back then I used to go into town and, with my girlfriend, would buy a "Fleur-de-Lys pie from a unit, which was roughly sited on the waste land behind the old Theatre Royal, close to where the ABC FORUM cinema stood, on New...

    US Base Pheasey Estate

Carolann, thank you. No I was a very young lad, and was only interested in the chewing gum and the hershey bars. Stay safe, and good luck with you research. Gerry.

    US Base Pheasey Estate

Thank you for this Carolann, now I know. It always fascinated me, to think that all those years ago, we would cadge gum at the sentry box, and today, people don't even know it was there. I guess if you look really hard, there would be signs of it all. Once again. Thanks. Gerry

Can anyone tell me the date that the camp was closed, and the US soldiers left?

    Coldstream Guards

Ah, that's why I wouldn't know him. I went in in that year, and my first four were 2365****. Ask him if he remembers this guy...JAN HOOPER! I bet he will, as he would be in with Jack. This is Jan inspecting rifles for cleanliness, in 1958.

    Coldstream Guards

Jack Astley.....can't recall him, ask him if he was in the 3rd Battalion stationed at Wellington Barracke, in Birdcage Walk, opposite, Buckingham Palace, and let me have his first four numbers. Stay safe.

    Coldstream Guards

I was in 1959 thru 1964. I served in the 3rd then when that was placed into suspended animation, I was deployed to the 1st Battalion. What was your brothers name and if you know it, what were his first four numbers? That will give me an indication as to when he was actually serving. Cheers! Gerry

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

Absolutely, I remember the discussion some years ago. At the time, I mentioned that my Grandad was Jack Hill, and was well known in the Rag Market. He used to hand grind/sharpen knives, using a grinding wheel on a bike.

What you describe is bliss. What a great time we had back then. "Dick Barton" at 6.45 every night. Much happier times.

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

Brilliant! just one small correction. It was the old lady that stood at the bottom of the Market steps, that called out "Andy Carrier", "Andy Carrier". She was a fixture there throughout my childhood. Thanks for the memories though.

    Birmingham Corporation bus history

Just an aside really, but when I went back on the buses in 1976, I was based at Sutton garage, with the Midland Red, and was driving all BMMO buses. Then, when we were taken over by WMPTE, we had an influx of veri slow, and tatty Metro Cammell buses, which, after driving D.9 and the Volvo ailsa...

    Birmingham buses

Now, this is one for anyone around some years ago, and on the buses. Can anyone remember the proposed new underground Bus Station (before the Station Street terminus was built) it was designated to be up next to the Town Hall, and when it was semi-constructed, they realized that it would not...

    Great Barr Colony

That was it! I remember the mention of the shed now. Funny isn't it, after all these years how something like this comes back to you. I was only a kid then, now I am 80! OMG! It would be in the early fifties, as I was at Beeches Road, when it happened, and we moved away shortly after that happened.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

    Great Barr Colony

Hi. As a youngster attending Beeches Road, school, we would be warned to stay away from the mental Hospital, as it was dangerous to play near there. Later, I remember a man escaped and committed a murder in the area. Anyone else recall this?
