According to Chris Upton on Midlands News last night, the street is named after James Turner, Gun Manufacturer.

I think the school shown is Birchfield Road Boys, Viv. Canterbury Road School is further up (towards Aston) and is still standing. My first job was at Bill Switchgear c1957.

I think Channel 4 chose their subjects ... ahem ... carefully! It's quite a long road remember!

Thanks from me also Mike. My gt grandfather lived at 3/16 Fleet Street in 1881 - this shows clearly on your map. I've always liked Fleet Street, but then I love canals!

My dad used that pub a few times, after his post round. Sad to see it in such a state, as you say a lot of Muslims living in that area and I can't see it ever opening again as a pub. Plenty of other closed pubs on the Soho Road if I remember rightly.

We've just been given (by a niece) a notebook that was used in the trenches by my father-in-law. He was in the Warwicks as a signaller. It's written in stubby pencil and has faded badly but I'm going to try and transcribe it so it's not lost forever! A lot of it details German numbers (Ein, Swei...
