    Blews Street

'Tis only what I'd heard Lyn. Prolly on this Forum (the fount of all knowledge) but not necessarily. I doubt my lot were in the Newtown Blews Street, seems a bit far for them to travle from their comfort zone around the JQ. Edit: Just looked at the map Mike provided and it's close to Brewery...

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

Never used Crown Avenue Viv. I used to cycle to work from Handsworth along Wellington Road and down Aston Lane. Once coming off same bike when making a left turn into Bill Switchgear .. trying to watch a braking lorry in front! Wish I could remember those cottages though!!!! Re: Birchfield/Perry...

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

They were two completely separate companies Viv. I worked at BS (not a good abbreviation?) when Ron Bill was in charge there, so a family business. As far as I know, they didn't merge at all. The cottages aren't the ones fronting (or WERE fronting) Aston Lane are they? I remember a row on the...

I think the school shown is Birchfield Road Boys, Viv. Canterbury Road School is further up (towards Aston) and is still standing. My first job was at Bill Switchgear c1957.

    the beehive pub soho hill

My dad used that pub a few times, after his post round. Sad to see it in such a state, as you say a lot of Muslims living in that area and I can't see it ever opening again as a pub. Plenty of other closed pubs on the Soho Road if I remember rightly.

100 years since the outbreak of WW1

There's not much content Lyn - but what there is is special! I'll try and post up some of the diary entries when I've done it.

100 years since the outbreak of WW1

We've just been given (by a niece) a notebook that was used in the trenches by my father-in-law. He was in the Warwicks as a signaller. It's written in stubby pencil and has faded badly but I'm going to try and transcribe it so it's not lost forever! A lot of it details German numbers (Ein, Swei...

    Favourite Family History Photograph

I don't actually know the date of my photograph. If someone could help (by looking at the clothes etc) that would be wonderful. Gt Grandfather Poolton died in 1914 aged 53.

I think the Madeira running man is supposed to be Christiano Whatsit, the footballer. Still, a little artistic license never hurts, does it?

Love the story of the swans. Squillions of them now by the bridge waiting to be fed, see what Mrs Rogers started!
