    Camden Drive And Camden Grove

The photograph shows Camden Drive - sometimes called Camden Grove (!) dtayler. Kathleen Dayus lived in one of the courts where the railing are in your photo, they went off at right angles there. My family (the Chapmans, mentioned in the book) lived in the next court, so I researched the area...

    Handsworth

There's a new Heritage Trail starting, running through Handsworth and Lozells, trying to put a "positive spin" on the area (as they say). Should be interesting?

    Spitfire at Moira today

Lovely Sue. My 2xgreat grandfather was a boatman from Ashby, and later Castle Donington. We went there a few years ago, but couldn't find Ashby canal so will be going again now and paying a visit to Moira Furnace. Thanks for letting us know.

What a lovely story Di., and I love the picture of Hillie and Kit. Hillie looks a little bemused don't you think?

    Soho Foundry

Some of the cottages are still there Lyn. We were taken round them by the museum curator (see start of this thread) and they were in very pooor condition then. Some had been used for storage of papers etc, some unsafe to go in.

What an amazing interior the Red Lion has Brumgum. Let's hope it re-opens as a restaurant and they can retain this.

Passages, Alleyways Gulletts and Snickets of Old Brum

Went to the burial ground before they closed/moved it - and it WAS fascinating. We were able to access it via some steps off Islington Row and walk around the overgrown graveyard. They closed it soon after due (I think) to people sleeping rough and being disrespectful. Tried to access it again...

    Norton's of Key Hill

I think one of those coats suitable for "the matronly figure" would suit me, Wendy ...sigh... Love the advertisements and how lovely to be descended from the Nortons!

    the trees pub hockley hill

Thanks for the photos Lyn. The Trees and The Duke were my dad's old watering holes when he finished work at the Sorting Office on Hockley Hill. I passed them often when I worked for Swallow Raincoats and then in the JQ. Never went in of course...........well, maybe a couple of times for...

Pear Tree Tavern in King Edwards Road?

I'd noticed that as well Mike and wondered if there was any connection, but I don't think so, John Charlesworth's wife was also a Jane. I guess most of the boat people had to "diversify" after the railways started making inroads (pardon the pun) and it was a close knit community.
