Could they be tram stops? There's one on the other side of the road as well.

    Tornado visits New Street Station

My husband's kicking himself now Colin. We heard the whistle and Don thought it was an engine moving in for the Severn Valley so he jumped in the car and went to the station .... not realising it was the Tornado going into B'ham. He's now very disappointed he's missed this. Oh well, he should...

    Warstone Lane Cemetery

I've always thought that Key Hill Cem was a little oasis in the centre of the Jewellery Quarter, workers from the area are often to be seen eating sandwiches in their lunchtimes (as I used to myself in Warstone Lane Cemetery). Warstone Lane had become very neglected but, thanks to the efforts of...

    Courtyards and yards of brum

Not too far away from my lot then Dennis: In 1901 my maternal great grandparents (Poolton) lived 8 back of 89 so neighbours to your Astons. My paternal family were at 7 back of 5 and 2 back of 16 in 1891 and 1901. I was so thrilled to see a photo at last of what it looked like at the time.

Bernie, a million thanks for that photo of Pope Street, all my family lived there and that's the first time I've seen a photo from that era. Charlie

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I never realised the Moat House was that scruffy either! Mind you, I didn't see it during the day and couldn't see it very well at night, not through my false eyelashes and with a few drinkie-poos inside me! I do remember going to a Jazz Day organised by Rob Pryke at his place (field ...

    New Birmingham library plans

I hear the lift broke down yesterday. People trapped were given drinks while they sorted it out! One of my worse nightmares.

And Lawrence Muddiman's in-laws lived next to me in Putney Road. I was great friends with their daughter.

    Handsworth

Blimey - I remember Terry Coton! I think he used to play with Alan Faulkener, John Lloyd and Philip Harris, all from Putney Road/Hutton Road in the fifties. We used to go up to the railway line path between Hamstead Road and Wellington Road to play cowboy and indians and Kick The Can at the...

    Handsworth

Most of the housing stock in Heathfield Road/Holly Lane etc seems to be still there Carol. They knew how to build 'em in those days! Handsworth was posh back in the day, I think that's why my mother wanted to live there. She had aspirations! (No money, but lots of aspirations):emmersed:

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

Thanks for posting the photos of the Birchfield Road shops, showing Maison Celeste (what a posh name)! Plus the ones of the library where I spent many happy hours waiting for an Enid Blyton book to be returned so I could borrow it. Most of the books there in the fifties had plain brown...

I enjoyed the Minnie Driver one as well - although I was disappointed her father wasn't called Lawrence, they could have shortened that to Laurie (Driver):courage::emmersed:

Ooooh he was lovely in Corrie though, wasn't he? I love a "baddie" me *, 'specially if he looks like Nige! (swoon) *Erm .. not in real life though thanks. I too enjoyed the look into the Mill best, it hardly seemed to have changed.

who do you think you are

Sorry, it must be me, but I thought the Nigel Havers episode was a bit boring. Still, I could at least lust after Nige. Ooooh....

Marks & Spencers in the 1930s

I can remember shopping at M&S in Birmingham when they still had stuff on counters with sales assistants standing behind. No, not gas lamps - I'm not THAT old!

I also remember Maison Celeste the hairdressers, near the Odeon. My friend's sister worked there and would often cut my hair for free.
