How information was handled on the Railways

"The use of electricity eventually led to three key developments: the block instrument (which was derived from the telegraph and used to ensure only one train was in one ‘block’ of track at any one time); the track circuit (a low voltage form of train detection) and the relay (a simple, robust...

Clifford’s Mills Charles Clifford & Son

This website says of that painting 'Fazerly Street' (sic). Lots of other paintings of old Birmingham there too. I wonder if anyone remembers Wal Farrow, works engineer?

How the mighty are fallen. From the newspaper, "Stechford - Aston Branch" or the "Grand Junction", as was!

    DONATIONS

Is there somewhere that explains the basis of this forum? Is it privately hosted? Does it exist as a trust, charity or extended personal hobby etc.? I am sure people would like to know what they are contributing towards and also whether there is some sort of continuity plan that doesn't just...

    Computer help

Back in the late 1980 we used a pair of Diablo 630 Daisy Wheel printers for all the best quality print jobs in the company. A bit bulky for home use though. I find black and white 'laser' printers best for home use. Most of my printing is text and unlike ink-based printers the toner doesn't dry...

    New Street Station From 1854 - 1966

The end of the train nearest the camera looks to be a guard's/luggage van, (note the double doors with two scouts loading kit). Perhaps the soldiers also had bulky kit that they were wanting put in the van? I suggest that there were only a few soldiers travelling on the train, it's just that...

Grammar schools and comprehensives in Birmingham in the 50s and 60s.

Are we to assume that 'd' stream is lower ability than 'a' stream? Won't the children know that too? Grammar and Seconday Modern in one school? Children did change streams in grammar schools and children did arrive from other schools so the path wasn't fixed under the older systems. Changing...

Grammar schools and comprehensives in Birmingham in the 50s and 60s.

I don't think an education system was ever changed to suit the feelings of the children! The children already knew their 'place' through streaming in the Junior School and the position in class that was written on each annual report. The Comprehensive system was and is political dogma, right or...

    Writing up family history

OED: A line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor. The word is recorded from Middle English and comes via Old French and late Latin from Greek genealogia, from genea ‘race, generation’. No adoptions, no first, second or third parents.

    Writing up family history

I had a DNA test, mostly to persuade my eldest female relative on my father's side to do the same. That follows the 'write it down' principle as once she is gone that marker is lost for ever. The two tests, submitted from different places at different times, showed the right degree of linkage...

    Writing up family history

A second cousin of mine was contacted by an American who said he was related. This American did a lot of research and 'wrote it all up' and produced and printed a book, sending several copies to my cousin. Then our American author had a DNA test and a family secret was revealed, he was the son...

    Write it down

Pre-covid I used to write up technical public presentations and some wondered how I remembered what was said. The key was just noting critical points and things like numbers, the 'story' I found quite easy to recall. There have been times when I have tried to keep logs of genealogy research...

    Write it down

I can't claim to have anything like that but I find it very difficult to keep track of 'work in progress'. I have tried it but when I am 'on a roll' it just distracts and when I am off track it just wastes time. I find it takes some time to pick up the threads of research but once done I can...

Grammar schools and comprehensives in Birmingham in the 50s and 60s.

The City of Birmingham Education Committee rules for assisted travel in 1960 plus starting papers from Saltley Grammar School. Probably cost over £11 for school uniform at a time when a bus conductor got about £13 per week .

    Rover Sd1

Some enthusiasts think that one can just slap an engine in a car and off it goes. There is a lot more to it than that, let alone the fact that there might not be the production capacity for the new engine. A bit of the the development of SD1 is described here.
