Archaeology: Study of Birmingham 1700 onwards

Thank you for posting this link, Jayell. I had been told that Birmingham was not tithable, yet this reprt refers to the 1845 tithe map for St Martins etc.

Lobbing means throwing, Mike, so I guess in the above context the reference is to bowling. Today bowlers might be offended to have their sport described in this way.

    Key Hill Cemetery

Thank you Leslam. Its good to tie in the description more accurately. Pity that 1845 author was so vague.

    Key Hill Cemetery

The attached excerpt looks to me like its probably a reference to the building of Key Hill Cemetery, but please correct me if you know otherwise.

Thank you very much, Lyn. I was hoping someone would repost a picture of the Salutation off Snow Hill. That was a large building to fill with drinkers.

    Salutation Arms

The Salutation, in darker times: In 1798 "the bull was baited in a field behind the Salutation Inn, Snow Hill & in conformity with the respectable inhabitants (who desired to put down the nuisance) the Birmingham Association, a body of militia voluntarily formed by the trading class, undertook...

Mike Jee's texts for Alan Godfrey Maps

Until I read the 1913 Hawthorns map & accompanying text by Mike Jee I had considered the Hollyhead Rd to be that dull stretch of road beween "A" & "B". In fact it has an interesting history. Whilst the map includes both developed & green field sites, the activity in that area includes industry...

    Handsworth

Handsworth from Soho stables by John Phillp 1795. This painting is from Shena Mason's well researched & readable book The Hardware Man's Daughter, a book of interest to those who want to read up on the Boulton family or Handsworth & Soho. Both text & illustrations are a joy...

    Handsworth

Phil posted on another thread these pictures of the toll gate at Handsworth. As Viv brought the subject up I hope that you do not mind them being included here, Phil. Locations well found, Mike & Viv for the bull baiting site & Villa Rd respectively.

    Handsworth

Thank you, Mike. I have not seen that picture before. Running north to south the railway line passes over or under Wood Lane, Wellington Rd, Hamstead Rd, Holly Rd & then Soho Rd so perhaps that will narrow down the possibilities for the bull baiting location.
