The Clements Arms Upper Trinity St

I am looking forward to your photos, Lyn. Although my exterior shots were ok the interior pictures were awful. Such a pity as its the inside of the Clements Arms that is most special. It deserves to be appreciated. Shirley

The Clements Arms Upper Trinity St

Thank you for posting the older photops of the Clements Arms, Phil. Its good to see how minimal the changes are to the buildings, even if the vehicles outside are very different.

The Clements Arms Upper Trinity St

The 1889 map clearly shows next to the Clements Arms the yard where Elizabeth Pugh would have run her blacksmith's business.

The Clements Arms Upper Trinity St

My thanks go to Mike for providing a copy of the 1839 map, which shows that the Clements Arms had yet to be built.

The Clements Arms Upper Trinity St

Built in 1840, or early 1841 at the very latest, the Clements Arms was at that time the business premises & home of William Pugh, beer retailer. By 1848 he was operating it as a beerhouse & car operation, though I have been unable to identify any example of the type of transport he would have...

The Clements Arms Upper Trinity St

The Clements Arms in Upper Trinity St is well worth a visit for the quaint interior alone. These photographs are of the exterior, but its hoped that our most intrepid reporter has interior shots & can post them later.

    The Great Stone Northfield

Thank you for posting these photos of the Great Stone, Michael. One of our oldest pubs, this pub deserves greater recognition. Shirley

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Thank you for posting the artwork of Lloyd's farm, Dennis. It is always a joy to see Everitt's work & that picture is new to me. Farm is run by a housing organisation & is protected by a formidable fence situated close to the property. Farm itself appears to be in good repair. The real farm...

    Fox and Grapes - Digbeth

Looks like your motivation has been noticed, Lyn. I hope that it goes well. Are you going armed with ideas? We have few Georgian pubs left. The Bull, the Gunmakers, the Great Stone, the Bell at Harborne are all in that select club & I understood the Angel on Stratford Rd was to keep its...

    The Crescent Ladywood

Thats the Crescent Wharf area painting, Mike. I simply did not know where to find it, so thank you.

    The Crescent Ladywood

David Cox's canal painting was of Crescent Wharf, I understand Dawn. perhaps someone can post a copy. You might find text on Sherratts or the conditions under which they operated if you look at the various books on early road transport.

    New Birmingham library plans

What an ugly & unsympathetic design has been used for the new library. It really jars with its surroundings. The Capita representations are rather misleading & fail to convey the darkness of the metal.

    Fox and Grapes - Digbeth

Thank you for sharing, Michael. Good to see the Fox & Grapes in happier times too. Shirley

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Thank you for posting the Ron "Smudge" Smith painting, Stitcher. Its obvious that its painted with such affection & the artist has such a distinctive style. too. What a pleasure it is to look at.

Homes Fit For Heroes Bill Brandt

Thank you for clearing that up, Mike & also Moss. I knew there had to be more to it & the photo in post 11 from the Coward & Hunt location helps to make sense of it all.

Homes Fit For Heroes Bill Brandt

Thank you, Lyn. If the photographer stood by Coward & Hunt to take the photo of St Georges Church there would have been a short terrace in view & the church tower would have been at an angle so I am still puzzled at the significance of the Coward & Hunt Corner.

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

Yes, Eric, I was thinking of Lowrie but did not name him in case anyone got offended. Personally I think the resonances are a compliment both ways. Thank you for adding some detail to Smudge Smith as if he did fewer paintings due to the time it took it might help explain why I could not find any...

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

The Ron "Smudge" Smith painting is heartwarming, Stitcher. I seem to remember that there was a northern painter who depicted people leaving work enmasse for home... Its unusual to see a painting set a night, Moss. I wonder if Brian Rollings committed the view to memory & painted once he got...
