    Toll gate keeper

BGFL is the best site that I ever found dealing with toll roads / gates. Here is a map that I saved from that website & also Peter Walker's map. There are various pictures available of turnpike cottages on the web if you want to see something generic. The turnpike cottage still stands on...

    Penns Lane Sutton Coldfield

The seemingly peacefull Penn Lane scene depicted in Dent's Old & New Birmingham belies the violent death apparently met by Mary Ashford there in 1817. Save Britains Heritage calls for protection of 42 & 44 Flint Green Rd Acocks Green

Outside any conservation area & therefore with minimal protection, 42 & 44 Flint Green Acocks Green have been sold privately. Save Britain's Heritage are concerned that these houses will be lost to redevelopment. https://www.savebritainsheritage.org/news/article.php?id=134...

    Census page missing

Ancestry should be able to deal with this if you contact them. I had a similar issue with FMP & the staff resolved the matter.

    John Speed's maps

Thats fascinating, Ell. Thank you. I had no idea that Birmingham was ever that tiny. Interesting that the coat of arms study may well have linked into Speeds's interest in the halls of the gentry.

    John Speed's maps

Thank you, Mike. I notice that John Speed was particular in including Halls. Perhaps that reflects the values of the time.
