    Aston Barracks

I don't remember the large barracks building (1st pic) being there in the late sixties, our HQ hut was something like a 40 ft square single storey building probably wooden or temporary now I think about it.

    Use of genealogy section

Thanks Janice , (big thumb) I already have all the names and dates/relationships etc. Just me needing to check for accuracy before submitting it all to a digital file. Once done I'll 'Join' Ancestry to flesh out the bones so to speak. Going to be a long haul, the tree starts in 1614 ...

My mother was born at 11 back of 21 in1938 . I know the family were bombed out and rehoused in Erdington. Looking at the above map from 1951 (post#30 I'm guessing her address was the blank square on right hand side/bottom.

    Birmingham Cinemas

Saw my first 'adult' movies at the Plaza Stockland Green, including 'Enter the Dragon' and 'Fritz the cat' although I certainly wasn't 18 :D A few of my aunties were usherettes at the Gaumont in town during the fifties before getting married. While I'm thinking of the Gaumont, how long did 'The...

    Keeping Warm

When my mothers marriage broke up in 1963 she fled the situation with us four kids in what we stood in, I was the oldest at 7yrs. Throwing herself at the mercy of B,ham council we were housed in what I remember as a church building filled with bunk beds which in reality was just somewhere to...

    Keeping Warm

That certainly was posh!! We had the single bar version with no coal/log effect. Holding a slice of bread against the guard with a fork to make toast was always a dodgy performance. Apart from the risk of getting electrocuted you had to keep swapping hands to avoid getting burnt!!

When did we all have fitted carpets.?

I remember at around 16-17 and been working for a couple of years I bought my mom her first fitted carpet (1972) When I say 'fitted' I mean I bought a thin foambacked remnant that was big enough to fit the living room and fitted it myself using a combination of a bread knife and a pair of...
