It's amazing what an old map can (or can't) tell you.

Strange one is this eh? It clearly shows Trafalgar Rd and Wellington Place on the map so something must have happened for them to change names.

Thanks Dek. I notice also that Eliot Street was Wellington Place so I wonder when and why the names changed. Do you know the date of your map Dek?

A friend of mine has been doing a family search and he came across an old map in B'ham Library dated c1813. He did a quick pencil sketch of the map and when I looked at it there was a road called Trafalgar Rd running parrallel to Long Acre and Nechells Park rd somewhere around where Cook Street...

I appologise Pudding, You're absolutely right. I thought the shop was on the corner of Crompton Rd but now tou've pointed out that it was on the corner of Elliot St it makes total sense. Chocks

Please note that the picture needs to be rotated 180 degrees. The 6 houses between the shop and elliot street are still there today. Chocks

I am looking for any information and a photo if possible of a shop that was on the corner of Crompton Rd and Long Acre in the Late 50's, early 60's. I seem to remember that it was a fruit and veg shop and it could have been called "Newtons" but I may be wrong and I think it was owned by a gent...

Here's a good picture that may help. You can see the co-op on the left by the gent on the bike. It looks like the same building that Lyn posted in post#1 and you can also see the Palace Cinema on the left just in front of truck. Chocks

Yes, the co-op has always been in the same place as it is today and the Palace Cinema which was the ABC Cinema was on the same side of the road a little further down toward the roebuck pub. The Wilton Cinema AKA Erdington Picture House was oposite the co-op .

The Palace Cinema was on the same side as the CO-OP just along the road toward the church. Wilton Cinema was opposite the CO-OP where Wilton Market now stands
