It doesn't look as though the pole jumpers had a very soft landing does it Viv? Very interesting to see that Mr Avery was 'Manhattan and (?) New York Timekeeper'. I wonder what LAC stands for after Mr Shearman's name?

    W T Avery scales

Viv, I remember the assistants drawing their finger down the indicator and peering at the result so I think A Sparks is right and it's a bit like the thing in the back of the map books where you look for where you are along the top and then for where you're going down the side and where the...

Seven Unusual or Lost Occupations from History

I don't remember lamplighters but I do remember the men who used to come round and clean the glass of the old gas lamps. They had a ladder which was narrower at the top just like in some of the pictures. Silk stocking, pegs and condensed milk tin? So far, so good - but can somebody tell me what...

Looking for Photographs and Films of Birmingham in 30s-70s for a Short Film

Hello BLISSJG. I expect you've already been in touch with Highbury Little Theatre in Sheffield Road, Sutton Coldfield but if not, John English and his wife, Mollie, were instrumental in setting up the MAC so maybe the theatre has something that would be of use to you. Steve Bowyer was the...

Thanks brummy-lad. Perfect, or as my Mom would say "couldn't be served quicker in a cookshop!"

    Gravelly Hill

Does anyone have an early map showing Gravelly Hill Station please? We're doing a project at the moment based on the book 'Steaming up to Sutton' by Roger Lea. Thanks.

    Oscar Deutch/Scrap Metal

There's a nice exhibition of photographs and memorabilia of Birmingham cinemas at the BMAG at the moment including some of Oscar Deutch's. This includes a picture of the Odeon in Sutton (closed at the moment) with the 'wing' still in place on the roof.

Old Pictures of Erdington (needing attention please)

Hi Johnny082, I'm trying to remember to take a photograph of the spine of the books I've photographed and managed to remember to do it this time. It's a reference book rather than one that can be taken out on loan. Meachem, the compiler of the book was a local historian so it's not available to...

As promised I checked the date of the photo and it was 1946.

possible to find/view graves in Key Hill Cemetery and St. Barnabas, Erdington?

Janice, doesn't re-open refer to a later burial? My aunt was buried in the 1930's and the grave was bought for three people. Her father died in 1950 so the grave was re-opened and then again in 1965 for her mother.

Castle Bromwich mystery air crash WW1

I wonder if it's worth contacting the Midland Aircraft Recovery Group? Something on the photo or the back might ring a bell with someone there. Or they may be able to offer suggestions for other contacts.

Old Pictures of Erdington (needing attention please)

Johnny082, My guess is that the photo of the children padding was taken almost at the top of Slade Road. The wall belongs to the Erdington Arms and the large building in the middle is the back of the pub. It looks to me about the 1930's /1940's but I've made a note to check when I go on Tuesday...

Old Pictures of Erdington (needing attention please)

I have recently found a great book (in size as well as content) by Meacham. It includes hundreds of newscuttings about Erdington. You will see that they aren't very clear images but it's difficult to take photos and hold the book down! I'm not sure whether they are prints from the newspapers...

    Chester Road Erdington

Viv, I re-read this thread and realised that I said it was the Bell & Cuckoo on the left. 5 years down the line and I'm putting my mistake right. The property on the left was known as 'The White House' and was never a pub as someone pointed out. The Bell & Cuckoo would have been on the...

    Changing your surname

My Auntie Dolly married a man named Arthur. I was looking for their marriage and found that Arthur had previously been married although this had not been mentioned in the family. Dolly & Arthur were married in church in the early part of the 20thC so I was quite puzzled. Arthur had a younger...

    Salford House Erdington Birmingham

Browsing the records for Aston Parish Church I found the following vestry note and transcribed it (keeping the spelling). The note is dated 1704 but I'm not sure which house it relates to. It does give a couple of names however. Mr Addis was living at Moor Hall at the time. There can't have been...

    Brookvale Park & Witton Lakes

Pedro, I don't know how I missed this map - it's brilliant! I have a Tomlinson map copy but it's nowhere near as detailed as this one. I will be studying this later and I'm sorry for missing it first time round. Thanks. Are they available online?
