    Swifts Cottage Fern Cottage Erdington

Hi Viv, Looking at Moor End Lane and Fern Road, they merge just at this cottage. I think it became known as Fern Cottage and although it had been thatched it was tiled in later life. This photo from Images of England, Erdington Volume II by Peter Drake and Marian Baxter shows the cottage.

    Aston Hall

My Mom and Mother in law (who grew up very near to the hall) both mentioned 'Shaggy'. Apparently this was the mummy in the museum which was in a conservatory on the rear of the hall (now a terrace). He was starting to unravel and parents would tell their kids to be home before dark or 'Shaggy...

    1950's 60s and 70s Erdington

Yes, we went 'up the village'. Strange how we always said 'up THE village' but only 'up town'. No THE.

Help with writing on photo please.

Totally agree Lyn. Joan lived opposite me and was a real character.

Penfold Golf ball factory. Bromford Lane

I don't know whether it's of interest Gavin but I've been researching A E Penfold's death at sea in 1941. The following thread link (starting at post #127) shows what happened to him which, with the help of the members of the forum, filled in many gaps. He actually lived in Erdington...

Help with writing on photo please.

Another thank you to you all, this time from my friend Chris who asked me to pass on her grateful thanks for all this research. She was especially pleased with the cuttings which directly include her mother and we agree with Janice that the lorry is actually taking them to Shurdington. Joan...

Help with writing on photo please.

Thank you all for this wealth of information. One of the girls was the mother of a friend and I know she'll be thrilled to see all this. We are taking part in an exhibition at Sutton Station to mark the end of the war 80 years ago and Chris happened to mention that her mother had been in the...

Help with writing on photo please.

Thank you Lyn and Brummy-lad. Yes, you're right. I'm attaching another photo which shows the whole building. I hadn't realised how long after the war the Land Army continued but my friend's Mom wasn't released until August 1948.

Help with writing on photo please.

This photo was taken in 1947 as the Land Army girls were just leaving for work. There are some faint words at the top telling where it was taken but I can't quite read it and I wondered if anyone can work out what it says please? It's believed to be somewhere in Gloucestershire or Worcestershire...

Sutton Road Erdington: large houses and their residents

Thank you all for solving the mystery. A lot of work has gone into that and it's really appreciated. Penny

Sutton Road Erdington: large houses and their residents

Thanks to Lyn and Janice. I took it from the CWG site and I've noticed one or two mistakes which have come to light through this forum. The reversal of numbers makes sense - didn't think of that (!) I did think that they'd put a 1 in front but that didn't work. Sutton Road ends at the terminus...

WW2 casualty and civilians who died look up

Most likely to be the BSA bombed in November 1940. There seem to be a lot of discrepancies but I feel this is the one: On November 19, 1940, the worst air raid on Birmingham occurred, with the Luftwaffe dropping 400 tons of high explosives and 24,000 incendiary bombs, including 18 parachute...

WW2 casualty and civilians who died look up

Lyn, I looked at bombing in 1940 but couldn't find anything in Small Heath for the date. I'm wondering if it was an explosion in the factory itself which I understand did happen. Might it be in the paper if this was the case? Definitely says December on the CWG site. NELLIE DUGGAN Civilian...

WW2 casualty and civilians who died look up

The Commonwealth War Grave site states that she died 28th December 1940 so Janice it looks as though you're right.

Sutton Road Erdington: large houses and their residents

Pedrocut, Thanks for the information. He died on 17th February 1941. Imr31303 - not sure if there is any connection but quite an unusual name especially with the golf ball connection.

Sutton Road Erdington: large houses and their residents

I have been researching a man called Albert Ernest Penfold who was a director of Dunlop. He died aged 56 on the Merchant Vessel Siamese Prince. He was travelling as a passenger. He had been an ARP Warden and resigned after a year. He is listed on the CWG's site as living at 170 Sutton Road at...

    188, Station Road, Wylde Green

Just come back from Sutton town and drove down Station Road to see what 188 looked like. I expected it to be one of the larger three storey properties further up but as you can see from the attached it's a really nice family home. So unlikely to have been a nursing home and no further forward.

    188, Station Road, Wylde Green

Thank you MWS. Janice, many thanks for trying. I came up against the same brick wall. It just seems strange that someone who was born in London and spent his working life at sea should be buried in Wylde Green. I can see why they wouldn't ship him to Australia where his family is living but...

    188, Station Road, Wylde Green

Hello, I wondered if anyone could help me please? I'm researching servicemen who are buried in St Michael's churchyard in Commonwealth War Graves ready for our display at Sutton Station as part of Heritage Week. I'm trying to find out where they or their families lived in relation to Chester...
