Smashing photos Janice, thanks for taking them. It was lovely to see everyone yesterday and we're looking forward to the next one.

    Sarah Guppy

Good question Janice but it definitely is Sarah Guppy. Graham came across her some years ago whilst doing some research I think at Bath University. Does anyone have access to the newspaper archive which includes 30th May 2016 Telegraph mentioned in the first post please? I'd love to read the...

    The Boar House: Bull Street

Yes Stokkie, that's what I meant - there are quite a few houses named Park View in Boldmere that can no longer see Sutton park as the area is very built-up now. Do we know exactly where the property is yet? I must re-read the thread and get my dates right. Several posts came up after I'd...

    The Boar House: Bull Street

Just wondering if William Smith's house once had sight of the cathedral (built 1715) - there is a recently re-gilded boar's head on top of the weather vane.

    Sutton Park History

It's all down to cash and lax rules as far as I can tell. The water companies are owned by shareholders who only care about profits (which are huge). It's got so bad that I won't eat river fish any more. The companies have permission to discharge their overflow tanks in heavy rain but many...

    Racquet Court Bath Street

A little off topic but it illustrates how small errors can occur - I see that Bob Brettle appears as 'Bettle'. Lots of names I recognise. I think it was when I was researching 'Victoria Hall' and a benefit match held there in the late 1800's that I first came across The Raquet/Rackett Court...

    Racquet Court Bath Street

I'll see if I can find anything Thomas - all my records then were kept in files rather than one a PC so I'm not sure I still have them but I will look and let you know.

    Racquet Court Bath Street

Thank you for all the comments above and yes, I have sadly found several errors in this sort of book, some of which are glaringly obvious but everybody makes mistakes, me included. I tend to use them as a starting point to be verified if I'm really interested by visiting the Archives here and...

    Rackhams Store

We visited the store recently and I can definitely say it was an 'experience'!! They seem to have been cutting back on lightbulbs and heating upstairs and it was full of stuff for the gym etc. I found it quite depressing.

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

I went past the site of the station yesterday and work seems to be in progress. I was on the bus so couldn't take a picture.

    Yenton Garage , Erdington , Birmingham 23

I seem to remember that there were actually two garages, one to serve the traffic heading towards Beggars Bush and one for the traffic towards The Tyburn. Attached is an image from a newspaper cuttings book from Sutton Library. Post #3 shows the garage by the Yenton pub and this photo shows the...

    Gravelly Hill

Definitely sheep John! My dad would have been 5 in 1918 and lived at Salford Bridge - wonder if he ever saw sheep being hereded down the road.

United Reformed Church, Holly Lane, Erdington.

Alan, As promised I looked for photos of your church today. I'm not sure if this newspaper cutting is of any use. It's a photostat of a newscutting. If not it has the date of the newspaper on so you would be able to look up the original at Central Library in Birmingham. It's from 'The News'...

    Little Hope.

Sorry Notsharp, I can't help with the identification but it's a smashing photo. My first thought on seeing the date was 'I wonder how many of them came back from WW2?" They all look so happy - hope someone can help.

    Avery Scales W&T Avery history

Thanks Lyn. I thought that would be the case. Graham and a friend are looking into John Wyatt's inventions at the moment so I'll do a bit of emailing to see if there is any hope of visiting. If we do manage to get in I'll let you know so that you can come too. It's a faint hope but nothing...

    Avery Scales W&T Avery history

I noticed from the Avery Scales website that the museum at Soho Foundry has now closed. Does anyone know what's happened to all the exhibits, especially the weighbridge? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
