Johnson's Garages Sutton Road & Tyburn Road

Some years ago I was given several photostats of photographs taken in Birmingham and I've been able to identify most of them. However, this one is still a mystery - can anyone say where it is please?

    High Street Birmingham

Viv, I was too taken up with the balconies to notice the horse although, a you say, it was centre stage! I wonder what regiment the men were from? There was a lot of recruitment in Birmingham for the marines around this time. I'm sure someone can tell us.

Really unusual picture Viv, I like the balconies!

    IN OUR GARDEN 2023

We had a lovely box tree on the patio, trimmed (intermittently and inexpertly) into a cone shape. It looked very elegant but we returned from holiday to find that it had been decimated by the box tree moth. It was covered in caterpillars and despite the fact that my neighbour picked them all off...

Corn Exchange Dining Rooms / Mrs Allday's Celebrated Tripe Establishment

Fascinating ed.s. A real glimpse into the past! I remember Mom cooking tripe and onions in milk for Dad in the evening and although he would always give me a little of whatever he was eating (I'd already had my tea), I never fancied tripe. I remember the pigs trotters too but not cow heels - any...

    West Bromwich Cemeteries

Thank you for that AnnS. It's not an area that I'm familiar with so I will investigate. I'm going to look at the Black Country Archives to see what they have too.

    IN OUR GARDEN 2023

No problem Kat - not to worry. I'm not very experienced with roses and this year my climber had done exceptionally well so I was really disappointed. The storm affected other plants too. Still, we can't control the weather than we!

    West Bromwich Cemeteries

Thank you Janice, that's wonderful! Sylvanus lived in Bratt Street but I had no idea what his house was like. I have his will detailing a lot of land which he owned in Erdington and Sutton and I can now go to the West Bromwich Archives (if they still exist) and find out a little more about his...

Thanks Janice, I looked through their card index and couldn't find anything but I have missed things in the past - as you know!!

Sorry, forgot to say that I have Silvanus' will and apart from a few small bequests to family members he seems to have left all his real estate to the pub landlord and his son - your information explains why if he'd gone to live there in later years. Thanks.

It doesn't bloom for long Kat so I've lots of deadheading to do now!

    IN OUR GARDEN 2023

Sitting watching the sudden storm taking most the blooms off my 'Generous Gardener' climbing rose. I could have done with another hour getting the weeds from the patio but rain has stopped play.

Thank you MWS - I don't know anything about FreeReg so must investigate. I tried everything I could think of so this is good news and I can see whether there's a gravestone now. Thanks again.

    West Bromwich Cemeteries

I'm trying to trace the burial of Silvanus (Sylvanus) Maybury whose death is registered in the first quarter of 1840 in West Bromwich. I thought he would be at All Saints Church but the burial doesn't come up on Ancestry as far as I can see. He seems to have had quite a connection to that...

    Sutton Coldfield area maisonettes

I think there are some in Four Oaks, Harland Road springs to mind. Probably some on Falcon Lodge too.

‘Old Hambeat’ famous character of Erdington

Very interesting story and portrait gentlemen. I've never heard of him so it was good to read something new. Well done.

    BHF EASTER MEET UP 2023

Well done Lyn. Thank you for organising the meet-up - a lot of hard work on your part. You must let us help with the raffle draw next year and give your poor knees a rest. You must have been standing for most of the time!
