    Limpet

Yes, they're a bit chewy but you soon get used to that. When I was a student at Harlech, we used to cook them in their shells, on the hot ashes of a fire, on the beach. You just have to be careful of where you collect them these days. Check for sewer-outlets first! Since then, I have them in...

    Birmingham in 1950s

Talking of coaches/buses having moquette upholstery during the 1950's, do you remember that buses were lit by rows of small, semi-protruding light-bulbs? I recall the day that I disovered that 'light' equalled 'heat'! I was travelling home to West Bromwich, on a single-decker bus from...

    Birmingham in 1950s

I had the yellow and white version, until its demise during a chip-pan fire in 1978. :(

    Birmingham in 1950s

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, in some other post, but there was something different about 'colour' in the 1950's ... I've thought a lot about this, over the years, and can only assume that it was due to faded paintwork. Paint was scarce during the war, and by the mid-fifties...

Astonian, that reminds me of my mother's cooking. She learnt to cook whilst away visiting a relative for a weekend, when I was eleven years old. Prior to that her cooking was dreadful! I don't know how anyone can improve so much in just a couple of days, but I shall forever be eternally...

I'm reminded of the expression: 'on the lam' - thieves cant for being 'on the run' ... in other words, to 'beat it' .... possibly of the same root?

    Origins of the Brummie accent

Accent wise, as so geographically too, Brum is about at the fault line between the Northern and Southern tongues. However, phonetically, it is closer to the Northern strain; but as Wessex says above, the Welsh influence has moderated the tonal quality somewhat. Just a few miles North, in...

To 'lamp' someone, probably (?) derives from 'lam' to beat/thrash someone or something ... to 'lame' etc. I recall reading about it years ago, but I can't remember the details other than it is possibly quite an ancient expression.

Re: For two pins My mum used this expression; I don't know if this is the correct meaning, but she once explained to me that, when on the point of being provoked, it wouldn't take much more (the two pins being basically worthless)) to react, to be thrown over the edge, as it were. I was...

    Things We Sent Off For

I once sent for a two piece suit, as advertised in, I believe, the Sunday Mirror (or possibly the Sunday Post?). It cost less than four pounds and was beautifully stitched; excepting, that is, it had an elasticated waist-band. Worse still, it was a virulent green colour and was square in shape...

    Birmingham in 1950s

Forgotten by whom? I agree with you Elizabeth! I rather liked the fifties, a time before the world went mad....and that's even allowing for being the aftermath of a World War. I recall them as being quite gentle times.

    Sawdust.

I used to use different grades of saw-dust in my lapidary tumbler for polishing gem stones. I also used it to freshen-up my cartridge brass for re-loading....ditto fine granulated nut-shells too. I used wood-shaving for my hens, until I began to detect a slight 'pine' taste to the eggs!

    My Favourite Musical

I used to love the 1950's-60's TV re-runs of the Eddy Cantor musical-spectaculars of the 1930's; masses of glitz and glamour produced during the 'Depression' years to cheer people up ... perhaps they should start showing them again!
