    Read John, Game Keeper

Re: John Read, Game Keeper Large estates like Warwick will almost definitely have records, in their archives, regarding game-keepers ... probably even have the 'game books' of 'catches' for the castle kitchens; as well as lots of other details concerning the duties of the keepers.

    morton bagot

Lovely pics Celia, thank you! I have a little story about this place: I visited this lovely wee church back in 1969, on a day-out to Henley-in-Arden with a mate. We'd come by bus and walked-out to Morton Bagot in the afternoon...it was further away than we thought. After an hour or so at...

    Fischer's watch and clock parts.

Thanks Shera, I imagine that must be the place. Any idea where Great Hampton Street is; is it in the jewellery quarter? Does anyone have it on a map? For some reason I just CANNOT remember how I got there; and yet I went there dozens of times!

    Fischer's watch and clock parts.

Does anyone have any information regarding the old firm of Fischers; they sold watch and clock parts. As a child I visited the shop on a Saturday morning, with a list of watch/clock-parts required by my father. Because of my unstable mememory, I can recall the shop itself, and the eccentric...

My life and little fishes !

''dog bite me'' is I believe, similar to 'Gor blimey' = 'God blind me' .... it may even be part of a secret sentiment expressed by supporters of the Crown (cavaliers) during the period of Oliver Cromwell's 'Protectorate' before the restoration of the monarchy...as in the cavaliers toast, where...

    Healer

Oh, I forgot to mention, the term 'faith-healer' was always a bit suspect; sometimes 'healers' healed without really knowing how they did it; they just had the 'touch' as it were. Often they would deny any 'magical' or religious connotations, to be sure of not falling foul of the authorities...

    Healer

If not a 'faith-healer' then it could mean almost anything ... but I'll stick my neck out and say that he might have been a 'manipulator' - some sort of early Chiropractor/Osteopath. These 'uncertified healers' still exist, especially out in the countryside; I know two myself, one of whom, Mr...

    Military Uniform help pre WW1

:( It printed-out a lot better than it scanned; sort of reverse the normal result. I'll have another bash later.

    Military Uniform help pre WW1

Thanks Paul ...how late is ''late 19th,C'' ? I reckon the photo was taken around the late 1860's-to-1871-ish, as I have a pic of him looking about ten years older, taken shortly before his death in 1881. Do those dates fit the uniform???

    Military Uniform help pre WW1

I've just trawled-through about thirty newspaper reports and am suffering PRINT fatigue! The various press accounts differ wildly, as they still do today, so nothing new there etc. So far I've ascertained, that Uncle Tom was on a 'working holiday' with his brother, although the brother had...

    Military Uniform help pre WW1

Aidan, I've now found several references to Uncle Tom; it's going to take a lot of reading-through. MANY THANKS for your help! Yet again, the story differs from the 'family story' - apparently he wasn't returning to Britain, but was taking a pleasure jaunt!
