The American film-clip is especially moving; thank you Lloyd.

    School Milk

Maggs - yes we had our milk as cocoa/drinking-cholate during the winter too. There were no refusers then, and alas no 'seconds' either! If I remember correctly, we could buy Cadbury's Chocolate Fingers at primary/junior school, and dunk them in our mugs of cocoa - bliss! No such luxury once...

    Anyone know this one?

Jean - it's basically the same as ''the whole nine-yards'' ......... 'dressed to the nines' originally meant a full suit of clothes; which took approx' nine yards of material. A sign of affluence etc.

    Brummie sayings & language

I always felt that the Black Country accent was less 'song-song' than the Brummagum version. The now exaggerated ''Dud-lee'' pronunciation is more down to Lenny Henry than owt else. However, as Lloyd says above, the accents have now merged/become less defined, than was once the case. Again...

Best just to just acknowledge them, rather than debate them; as that way lies war-fare!

I've never heard that one; I like it!

    Brummie sayings & language

Bob, did your gran originate from the countryside? (Well, I suppose we all did originally) as 'raddle' was/is the red dye (these days there are many colours) used to mark a tup's belly, in order to stain a ewe's back, to show that she had been mated etc. Most doorsteps were either red, or...

    Date query

I agree with Shortie; a few years prior to the Great War, as the leather-coat of the gentleman on the far right, appears to be of a pattern later favoured by German airmen . I don't suppose it would have been too popular during, or after the war. I really DO enjoy this form of speculation...

    A Journey Tony Blair

I'll wager even fewer will buy Gordon's memoirs! Well, not for reading purposes anyway ... ;) er, you're right Mossy - sorry!

Brummie Holidays & Days out on Old Postcard .....

During the early 70's I was at college near to Butlin's Pwllheli camp in North Wales. Every time I passed the camp I couldn't help but feel sorry for the inmates ... sorry, holiday-makers ... viewed through the wire-perimeter fence it looked just like a prison camp; especially during the...

Was Grandad really a Boxer? (Ernest Albert Cale 1892-1947)

I know that 'Nipper Pat Daly' (who was an excellent boxer; my father, Archie Woodbine, fought him, and lost) had to call himself 'Nipper' because another boxer was called 'Kid Daly' (or Daley)... but it certainly wasn't 'Nipper' Daly, as he never fought in America. I have come across...

My life and little fishes !

Carolynn - that was fascinating! Where did you get it from? It contains many truths, but also many myths and apocryphal assumptions based on certain truisms.

    Fischer's watch and clock parts.

You keep raising memories Jean! I remember the Horology Magazine well ... it was all very sombre; all in shades of grey. Did it not have a picture of 'Big Ben' on the cover? Shiny paper if I remember correctly? Yes, Dad had a small parafin-heater ... he smell added to the general...

    Read John, Game Keeper

Re: John Read, Game Keeper Kay - I've really no idea; but I'd give Warwick a go first. Just phone-up their estates office and ask for some advice; or to be put-through the the archivist. Good hunting!

    Fischer's watch and clock parts.

Yes! Dad used to refuse point-blank to repair Timex. They just got returned to the factory and had an entirely new movement fitted. He hated them with a passion and regarded them as an insult to the art of watch-making! He only repaired 'interesting' pieces ... unless pressed, and then he...

    Fischer's watch and clock parts.

Len, I think that must be the place; but obviously there must have been a 'take-over' as ''Guru'' doesn't sound very Jewish to me!

    Fischer's watch and clock parts.

Hi Jean, what a coincidence! After Dad died, my sister made a collage using all Dad's old watch-parts too. Which now proves to be a BIG mistake as you can get a fortune on ebay for old watch&clock parts! Watch-repairing tools are very much sought after too. Yes, the lists! Balance-staffs...

My life and little fishes !

My old maths teacher, Mr. Blakemore, used to say ''Ye Gods!'' as he banged his head against the blackboard. We weren't the brightest maths set!

Celia, I confess, I still can't read bus or train time-tables ... they remain a mystery to me ... :( But I've learned to carry a map!
