    Balsall Heath.

Indeed I do, she lived next door to us and was a few years older than me. I'm pretty sure I've got a picture of her dad somewhere; I think he also had an old Jaguar car at one point and a campervan. Do you still see her? At the garage the owner was Eddie Parker I think.

    Balsall Heath.

The Pig and Whistle traded for a few years. It was on a lease from M&B and did a roaring food trade lunchtimes from local office workers. I knew it extremely well in 1986; not sure when it changed to the Catherine O' Donovan. The lunchtime pork or beef roast was fabulous.

I remember the garage being built @1960/61 as I lived opposited at No7 Athole Street. Mom had a Ford Popular off the fella who owned the place, IIRC his name was Parker.

    St Chads Hospital, Hagley Road

A friend in brum told me of the demolition. Knocking down is all well and good but what is being built to replace the housing now gone? The three blocks including Balfour had three hundred homes; they were (back in the 60's) really nice flats. Just had a look at the area via Google Earth, the...

    Baker Richard Bissell Street

Great stuff lads. I'm now confused, I think the reference to Birrel Street is wrong, I think it should have been Bissel Street? He is buried in Padua in Italy just to add to the confusion A student from Padua university took the pictures after I emailed the uni asking for help, a nice...

Winson Green / All Saints Asylum

My Welsh goddess trained first at Dudley Road in general nursing then moved into Mental health nursing at All Saint's. In the 1980's they had a fantastic nursery for the staff's children and the Social club was pretty good for a late drink. Back on track, there is no obligation to keep all...

    Tastes Of The Past

Ahh, Camp Coffee....you have to draw the line somewhere and that is it. My dad loved it made with steri milk a taste I never shared. Anyone remember the Tow Rope cafe opposite the Rum Runner? They used to sell it. Roll out of the runner about 02:30 and if you couldn't afford a curry and a...

    Tastes Of The Past

Many thanks GG for the welcome. Beef dripping/dark jelly, toast, salt and pepper yum yum. Lot of talk these days about 'killer' food but there is no such thing so long as you eat in moderation. Butter is now OK to eat after years of us being told how bad it was lol. The occasional plate of...

    Tastes Of The Past

Love this forum, I've been in Wales for thirty years and its wonderful BUT...sometimes I miss brum. Childhood food memory for me back in the 50's/60's include my dad's pigs trotters and mushy peas. Soak peas overnight (with the soda tablet) add trotters and slow simmer until peas are mush...
