Birmingham Workhouse Dudley Road Western Road opened 1852

I have read with great interest the thread on the Birmingham Workhouse. The parish was the main administrative body for local services until the nineteenth century. It was responsible for law & order, upkeep of roads and the poor. They were run by people who could read, write and keep accounts...

    Martin Shaw.

"Inspector Gently" with Martin in the leading role is one of the best detective series ever made and one of the most believable. We are watching the current repeats and enjoying them as much as when we watched the original showing.

    Kings Norton Workhouse

After the KN Union was formed, the original parish workhouses continued in use for a time so it's not possible to say with certainty when only the Union workhouse on the Green was in use covering all 5 parishes in the Union. That said, I'm sure the example you mention is correct.

    Kings Norton Workhouse

Kings Norton Workhouse - a note Prior to 1834, looking after the poor was the responsibility of the Parish partly by providing a Workhouse. KN probably had a workhouse from about 1729 and from 1803 a building on the south side of the green was used. In 1836 the Kings Norton Poor Law Union was...

    Benjamin Zephaniah

I met Benjamin many years ago at an event at our local library. He was incredible both as a poet and as a human being. The verse pjmburns quotes is part of a long and compassionate poem about the treatment of turkeys. Benjamin was a strong supporter and activist for animal welfafe and a long...

    Moseley Village

Not sure where I copied this photograph from but it shows some shops in Moseley village about 1915 [?] looking towards the city centre. Also attached is a similar view from Street View to identify location. On the original you can just read the white sign to the left of the shops - "Perth Dye...

    Flora Original

Have just checked on tubs - the original Flora Original was based on sunflower/rapeseed/palm & linseed oil. The new so called original has dropped palm oil and substituted coconut oil but this has increased saturated fat content by nearly 50%. Apparently this applies to all Flora products...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

There is vehicle access to the station - for setting down etc - and trying to get out again. A mini island is the worst possible solution to control traffic at an incredibly busy junction. Traffic is regularly backed far up Wake Green Road from village traffic lights and ditto in the other...

Articles: The Iron Room, Birmingham Libraries. Recent Articles

Is it really 10 years since the Library of Birmingham opened? Perhaps a good time for users to appraise it rather than by the establishment? My recollection [as a bit of an insider] was that the council wanted to get their hands on the old library site for other reasons not because it needed...
