Dawes Double Blue was my aspiration too. Never got one though. I seem to recall there was a Lincoln Imp at the same time in black and yellow. Was that by Raleigh. I think they were almost identical in equipment. Was it some sort of badge engineering?
That's a comprehensive account of the building and very interesting. I have no idea how long it was used by the GPO but I know my father did some training there, around 1960 I think.
For no other reason than its inspirational name, I would have loved to tick off The Stewpony at Kinver as one of the many hostelries I have had the pleasure of visiting. Pub names can be imaginative. It just seemed to pass me by among the many pubs I have visited in that area.
I should have said in my previous post, great photos Mark.
I think the station retains an aura of bygone days and, hopefully, it will be left as it is with its redundant features in place for posterity.
I'm a retired postal worker from Sutton Coldfield delivery office and I have no recollection of mail being dropped off at Sutton Park Station. It was all shunted in off the main line alongside the deck of the Postal Customs depot, unloaded and the train went off into the main line again. The...
I'm surely not the only one chomping at the bit to get some serious gardening underway after a relatively mild winter. All my fence maintenance is done, baskets, chains and containers at the ready and fertiliser in place waiting to be spread.
These are the weeks of promise of good gardening...
Just along from Palmerston Road and almost opposite Stoney Lane before that junction was re-routed. It was a regular Saturday afternoon haunt for us local teenagers. For a few years all of my pocket money disappeared in their till.
Referring to the title of this thread, how about our current abode? My wife and I and our three grown up children moved into our house in 1992. All three children flew the nest within five years allowing us to adapt our house to our requirements and we have no wish to ever leave.
We have...
I have a vivid memory of being in Small Heath park in 1956 when news came through that Birmingham City had beaten Sunderland 3-0 in an FA Cup semi final. Pity they couldn't finish the job, losing 3-1 to Manchester City in the final.
The park was walking distance from our house in Sparkbrook so...
My first holidays were to Barmouth. Besides me there were a brother and sister who are twins. Early 50s and I'm sure our parents had to go without to afford us our annual week away. Anyone who's taken the train to Bamouth from Birmingham will know that it's a lovely journey that only gets...
My mom's number was 373754. There were stables in Anderton Road, Sparkbrook which I'm reasonably sure we're for the Co-op horses. They would have been part of, or adjacent to the council yard on the corner of Anderton Road and Montgomery Street.
My wife and I go to many traditional and folk gigs in Birmingham and the MAC provides an intimate venue for such concerts. We were there as recently as October 9th amongst an enthusiastic audience and there's nowhere better on such an occasion. There used to be outdoor summer concerts in "The...
Wonderful photos Mark. I live less than a mile from that historic station and I'd never given thought to the derelict building on the other side of the track. Being a goods only line there's not much opportunity to explore although I've had a good look at Sutton Park station just further down...
