    Saltley & Alum Rock

Saltley Hall, used to be behind the houses on Ash Road. We lived right next to the opening that led to it. When I was small, the house had gone, but, the stables remained. There were factories up the 'opening' in the stables and other buildings that belonged to the house. The 'opening' was my...

Thanks for the pictures Phil. I lived in Ash Road (my mum still lived there until her death last year) and I walked down Adderley Road daily.

    sayings

My aunty used to say that to me, when I was wondering out load why my mom was late picking me up. Me being around 5 yrs old then, believed her. There was only one black man that I knew of in those days, and every time I saw him on the street, I would look at him suspiciously..

    Definition of “Brummie”, “Astonian” etc

You reminded me of our house when I was little. We had one cold water tap with a very deep sink. No electricity upstairs, no bathroom, a bath on a Friday night before bed, in the tin bath, in front of the paraffin heater. No fridge, my mom used to buy 'stera' off the milkman and put in in a...

I remember our insurance man, from the Pru' or Pearl, we had insurance with both companies. I think he's name was Banks or Vernon. He used to come of a Friday night when 'come dancing was on' I'd be having my bath in front of the fire, getting ready for bed, with my pj's warming on the fire...

Talking of not getting thanked - my department was taken over by another company and they don't give you ANY public holidays, not even Christmas, you have to 'pay for them'. I hope that this will not become a trend. Fashionz

    French Skipping

I seem to think we called this Chinese Skipping, or is that something different, and we made a kind of cat's craddle with our feet.

    crocodile works

Everybody on this thread seems to know all about 'Crocodile Works', I've never heard of it, why was it called 'Crocodile Works' does anybody know? In this thread I've read that they make matchetts (to kill crocodiles maybe, you tend to get a lot of those in the UK, especially round Brum)...

    Nicknames

Mine was Stretch at school because of my surname - Stretton. And. later, one of my boyfriends tagged me Miss Mouse, because I was so quite (can't say that now). Later it became Miss M, then The Divine Miss M, when Bette Middler brought out her album of the same name. Now I'm called Limey Lynda.

    Ash Road, Saltley

I used to go to Sunday School in Crawford St. And I had friends who lived in the back to backs, I never went in one. Before they demolished them they did them up, only to knock them down just a few years later. I remember the front gardens being long and narrow.

    Ash Road, Saltley

When my mom lived in Crawford St, they had two bedrooms, I think. Maybe it was one room with a division. Anyway there was nine kids, so I guess they were glad of a bigger house. In Ash Rd, they lived in the older houses, at the back was the remains of Saltley Farm. Even when I was small the...

    Theatre shows

'Course the kids shows count, it's still theatre, and just as much goes into them by the actors as any grown-up stuff.
