Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

Now that really does bring back memories! My mom too would also leave my dinner on a plate perched on a saucepan of water on the cooker for hours.

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

There's something about that little area around there that's quite peaceful, it really is an unspoilt part of Birmingham. I expect it will change when it's redeveloped.

"Try telling the kids today, and they won't believe yer." I've discovered a home movie of me and my friends that I thought I had mislaid.

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

Frozen windows on the inside. The Champions. The sound of milk bottles being carried. Shared national pride when England won the world cup. Butter in a bucket of water on really hot summer days. The man who lay on broken glass in the Bull Ring and passed his cap round for money. Bag of crisps...

    Dale End

Tesco's was around here in the mid-seventies (I seem to remember the building of it in 1973). A man who I worked with many years ago told me he had to report to the army recruitment office in Dale End when he was conscripted at the start of the Second World War.

Haven't seen this photograph before of The Ship Ashore. It became The Outrigger, anyone know when and the reason for the name change? Those stairs kept going up and up...

    Canals of Birmingham

I was so excited at discovering the 'original' photograph (#922) that I accepted the accompanying caption without question. Hopefully I've learned my lesson. Having said that, I found out a few things I didn't know.

    Canals of Birmingham

It was around this time that canals were viewed as an asset for tourism nationally. I remember going to a few canal festivals near The Long Boat in the 70s and 80s which were very popular but I'm not sure if they have any canal festivals in Birmingham now.

You're right Lyn. I think we are so lucky we have photographs, maps and other resources to 'reinforce' our memories (for want of a better term).

    The Gunmakers Arms, Bath Street

Thanks for that, Lyn, Never really noticed the blocks before (paint obscured it), just assumed it would be brickwork.

    The Gunmakers Arms, Bath Street

The building itself appears to be Georgian but what puzzles me is that it appears to be constructed of 'blocks' and not bricks. Anyone got an explanation about this?
