    Parisian Club Cannon Street

Here's a photograph from the 1970s, those Foster Brothers' lumberjack jackets with the fake sheep's wool collars defied sartorial taste and seemed to be around forever. .

    BBC 'gangsters' 1976

I'm pretty certain it's Highgate Park in Balsall Heath. If you look carefully at the segment filmed in the park you can see the one of the green copper turrets of The Rowton Hotel on Alcester Street to the right of the screen.

    BBC 'gangsters' 1976

I couldn't find this on the site but I think it's worth a mention (apologies if it is listed elsewhere). For me the television drama works on many levels; it has an interesting storyline (feel free to disregard the music but I still quite like it) and it gives an amazing account of what...

    The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

Not unexpected but it is a great shame. I was lucky enough to spend some nice hot summer's there, sitting on the balcony enjoying a nice view of Summerhill Library with it's terracotta bricks shimmering in the summer heat I can't see how the new building will complement the Georgian cottages...

    Vale Onslow Building Stratford Rd

Birmingham Mail says the old Vale Onslow motorcycle shop on Stratford Road is on fire. There's going to be a lot of sad Brummies tonight. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/live-updates-major-fire-breaks-14213431

    Clint Eastwood

I was afraid this might happen! Clint has just texted me tell you both to "Chuck it!" He picked up the phrase when he nipped out of The Albany to visit The Crown over the road to order something from The Cockle Man to go with his Manhattan. His view of Birmingham however was tarnished...

    New Inns Berners St Lozells

I had a job in the summer of 1976 which involved doing an awful lot of walking in the Lozells area and was amazed how many of the 'old' pubs (and shops) were still open. Even then the area had some charm, I remember how nice St Silas church in St Silas Square looked when I came across it...

I think this might be the location, Lyn. The space to the left of the building matches the map.

    The Stork pub Heathfield Road

A day nursery! I used to travel on the 46 bus through Lozells from town when I was studying at night school in Brooklyn Technical College (a long time ago). It turned right down Finch Road and passed a small but pretty pub called 'The Village Maid' which was not far from The Stork. This is...

    The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

I looked at one of your posts from a while ago about The Duke of York in Hockley Hill. It was a Georgian pub with loads of atmosphere. In the late 80s / early 90s a friend of mine saw the entire bar being stripped of its furniture, pumps, fittings etc, his suspicions raised he phoned the police...

    The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

Thanks for that Lyn, I didn't realise there was so much 'intact' evidence to be found in that area. Just out of interest, have you any knowledge of the plaque in The Crown I was asking Mike about?

    The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

Where were the blue bricks, Mike? In a slightly similar vein, I used to drink in The Crown on Broad Street about 30 / 40 years ago. In one of the rooms there was a brass plaque high up on the wall. The plaque showed where the tallest man in Birmingham had reached his hand. I don't have the date...

    The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

I hope The Mail doesn't carry a story tomorrow informing us that the lead roof of The Longboat was stripped and that the police are looking for a man and his female accomplice!

    The Longboat, Cambrian Wharf

Thanks for that, Lyn. I thought the deal was signed and sealed. I wonder if the pub still has the traditional canal boat tillers at the end of the seats? Bet it was cold down there on the cut!
