Aston, Lozells & Witton Photos Reposted thanks to Ray Griffiths...

I may be wrong but, I don't think the rear of Burlington Hall was on Park Lane. It's true that Park Lane is behind Burlington Hall but, the hall itself is not in that photo. Perhaps there may have been a back entry somewhere but look at this photo to see what I'm saying.

What do you watch on tv nowadays ?

Just in time for us Baby boomers (I was born in 1946) to start paying.

    Advertising in the past

Hi William, there is a you tube site that does credit Michael Holliday with these adverts but, most websites credit them to Bing Crosby. Their voices were very similar but, I believe it to be Bing.

"......keep going well, keep going Shell, you can be sure of Shell". Who remembers Bing Crosby singing that TV ditty in the early 60s? If you don't, it's on YouTube.

What do you watch on tv nowadays ?

"Thank you for watching Talking Pictures TV". I always wait for the chap to say that after watching an old b/w British film. Sort of makes me feel appreciated.

    Birmingham Cinemas

I saw Summer Holiday at the ABC Forum in New St. I saw it from the Gallery. I'm sure many of the members remember those seats. You didn't look up to the screen, you looked at it just above your knees.

I'm sorry to hear this news. My condolences to Alan's Family.

    WWII Barrage Balloon Sites

In the early 1960s I regularly cycled from Aston to Drayton Manor Park to fish for pike and remember seeing one opposite the Tyburn Pub.

    RIP Astonian (Alan)

I'm sorry to hear about Astonian. I've never met him but, I always enjoyed reading his posts which had a wealth of his memories of Birmingham and especially Aston.

    Wheeler Street Lozells

Seeing this photo that Astoness posted in #206 reminds me of the chap who ran it around 1961-62. He had a little waxed moustache and always wore a checked coat and a pork-pie hat. His own car was a Morris Minor with lots of various car badges spread across the grill. Me and my friends were...

    Gower Street

Saw this photo on the Guilford St thread and realised that it is the only photograph I've ever seen that shows any part of the 'new' school. The ground floor of the furthest section shown was the library in 1961, next to our classroom ( Mr Ward 4B ).

    Guildford Street Lozells

Hi Gina, I will look out for your book. I was with Doctors Firth & Carolyn ( Carolan? ) but they were situated at the bottom of Wheeler St.

    Guildford Street Lozells

This photo is one of those "Oh Wow" photos for me. That's where me and my friends used to hang out in 1960-61. I haven't seen that place for 58 years. I believe the house on the corner of Gerrard St with the hedged wall was a Doctors Surgery.

    Then & Now

High St, Aston 1949, looking towards Park Lane with the Malt Shovel pub on the left. Again, a snapshot of the You Tube video and a Google image of 'now'. There are lots of photos showing various parts of High St but, I've never seen one showing both sides of the street as this image does. It...

    Prisoners of War WW2 photos

Thanks to everyone for your likes & comments. Here are some more images of Pop's legacy. He is the first one in the missing list and he is standing second from left in the photo.

    Prisoners of War WW2 photos

He did return safely and raised four more children, one of whom was my wife born in 1947. 'Pop' as we called him died in 1985.

    Prisoners of War WW2 photos

The soldier seated on the far left of the 2nd photo 130842 is actually my Father-in-Law Private Albert Rogers who was a despatch rider and was captured at Dunkirk. I have the actual photo with a few more postcards he sent back home. Here are two of them. First showing him in 1938 on his BSA J34...

    Then & Now

A snapshot of High St, Aston in 1949 taken from a you tube video looking down towards Burlington Hall on the left, and the Barton Arms pub further down. The dome on the right was the Globe cinema and just above on the horizon is probably the fire station tower in Lancaster Place. The 'now' photo...

    BSA Factory 1940s Onwards

Luckily, I was never initiated. I first worked there on the Beagle Cylinder heads ( strangely, I've never seen a beagle on the road) before moving to D Section working on the A50 /A65 crankcases. I too used to wander around the factory in my dinner time and sometimes also scavenged the scrap...
