    Watsonia sidecars

Here's my BSA A7 Combo in 1965. I've no idea what make the D/A sidecar was. I used to park it on the road at night complete with hurricane lamp (half painted red) chained to the frame. One winter morning I came out the house on my way to work, got on the bike and as I kicked her over it felt...

    The cane at school

I had the cane a couple of times at Gower St School. The one reason I most remember is the time I wrote on a piece of paper "Sabrina was in the bath so Frank Sinatra" and passed it to the kid next to me but unfortunately was seen by one teacher.

    Then & Now

I can't say for certain Phil. Being only 8yrs old at the time I only saw it as a normal old fashioned church and I never saw any building work. I am assuming now that it was the original building because it was obviously well before the fire of 1970.

    Then & Now

I went to the St Barnabas Sunday School when I lived in Leamington Rd 1954-5 but, I didn't appreciate the architecture at the time.

    Birchfield Road Perry Barr

This photo of Birchfield underpass was taken on 27th March 1962. I remember because it was my 16th Birthday.

    Then & Now

Those of you familiar with Alma St, Aston may recognise Herbert's shop on the corner of Whitehead St in 1967. I took the next photo in 2013 at the same spot. The last photo is Google Earth 2018. It seems they can't quite make up their minds what to build there now.

    Machines at railway stations

My wife still keeps this memento of our walk through Snow Hill Station after a night out in 1963.

    Lozells Girls School

Hi Linda, my wife Sheila (nee Rogers), says Miss Cage was Maths & P.E. Sheila left Lozells School at end of 1962.

    Then & Now

Hi Lyn, yes, I also find that many of the "now" photos seem desolate compared to the photos of familiar (almost cosy) looking places we knew in the 60s. Barry

    Then & Now

Looking up Snow Hill from Summer Lane junction late 50s. Such a difference in 2019. Only the two buildings on the right, although modernised, still remain.

    Then & Now

Stoney Lane. This 1954 photo holds many memories for me. I was 8yrs old then and lived just down from these shops in Leamington Rd. You can just make out a barber's pole behind the lampost - it's where I went for my hair cut. While in there waiting my turn, I was often puzzled by the barber...

    Then & Now

The junction of Alma St & Inkerman St in 1960 I took this photo below in 2013. The building on the extreme right still stands. I drove along here on Wednesday and it still looks more or less the same as 2013.

    Birmingham Cinemas

When I was a youngster In 1955 I was living in Leamington Rd, Sparkbrook. I had a wonderful choice of cinemas in the area, Olympia, Carlton, Imperial, Piccadilly, Waldorf, Moseley Picture House & the Alhambra were all within walking distance. So, looking through the cinema listings on the inside...

    Our childhood toys

Talking about the stupidity of youth, I once hacksawed a golf ball in a vice to see what was inside it. I soon found out when I was sprayed in a white sticky liquid.

    Our childhood toys

I remember using two bolts either side of a nut with a cap in between. Then after tying a handkerchief to the assembly, throwing it in the air and waiting for it to land with a bang.

    NewStreet Aston

The photo Lyn posted on #1 is one I haven't seen before. I too remember buying those liquorice sticks (we called them "Spanish Sticks"). Apologies if this photo is somewhere else on the Birmingham History website. There is another photo showing Mrs Herbert's shop on the corner of Whitehead...

    What type of motor cycle?

My money's on it being a fanny Barnett (Francis Barnett). You can just about see the FB logo on the magneto cover. Found this photo of a 1929 Model 18 172cc which has a few differences to the photo but, not enough to dissuade me. Incidentally, my first motorbike which I bought in 1962 was a 1957...

    House that Jack Built

My wife says there was a haberdashery called "Sheila's" next door to Burlington Hall. This may have been the shop Lyn was referring to. Just up from Whitehead Rd was Davis's clothes shop which was three shops joined together. Each shop section had wooden steps between them.
