    Charles Winn (valves) Ltd

Hi Mike, this photo was taken outside of Sam Colwill's shop in Ilfracombe. So it looks like they are returning home from their annual outing. That's probably why they look so glum.

    Charles Winn (valves) Ltd

Charles Winn started his business in 1859 as a plumbers merchant. The business ran for 141 years until it's closure in 2000. I had the privilege of working for Charles Winn (valves) Ltd as a Quality Control Inspector for just over 25 years. When I first started in 1974 they were located along...

    Charles Winn & Co

Came across this thread by accident. Yes, I worked at Charles Winn. The yellow spot that Oldmohawk mentioned (#7) was the chimney to our foundry. The photo Phil posted (#1) I'm not familiar with and I don't know where that was. When I started there in 1974 there were only two buildings I was...

    Then & Now

I don't know when this was built but, it's quite impressive.

    Then & Now

I was a steward at Villa Park 1980-84 (free pie & cuppa) and remember when they became European Champions. Not been around that area for years but, I went past there last year along Trinity Rd and was really surprised to see the stand extended across the road.

    DNA Test

I find myself in that position mentioned. I took the Ancestry DNA test and to cut a complicated story short, I am half Italian from my biological Father's side yet there were no matches whatsoever other than U.K, Ireland & USA.

    High Street Aston

Lyn, this 1st photo shows No 90 High St when it was a house. Later photos show it to have converted to a shop ( 2nd photo). Some members can't recall as to where these places were so I have pointed out Hawkins & Burlington Hall. Sorry for the clarity of the 2nd photo as it's a part of a larger one.

    High Street Aston

Hawkins jellied eel shop. If I remember correctly, Hawkins was about four shops down from the corner shop. I remember the 2nd shop down was a second hand/junk shop because I used to buy old spanners from him for my motor bike.

Story of our youth Dave. Our Parents just didn't understand us.;)

    High Street Aston

Great photos of a road I used a lot but until I saw these photos couldn't even remember those shops. If it's the same one, I remember the tailors shop because in1960 my Dad bought a roll of suit fabric from a bloke in a pub. He took me to be measured up and a suit was made. Problem was, for me...

    Then & Now

I worked at Coventry Rd Garage as a conductor then driver 1969-1973. When I first came out driving, the buses used to exit via that Coventry Rd gateway. It was always a risk that someone would come tearing round the bend and collide with you. That's probably the reason we changed to coming out...

    Pubs Of The Past

Using the only two photos I could find of the White Swan Hanley St I combined them together to make this first image. I did this for my Sister-in-Law who, together with her siblings lived there with their parents when they ran it. They were Frederick & Clara Morrall and ran it from 1941 until...

    Cigarette smoking

I still have my Stepmom's musical cigarette box & table lighter. As you would probably expect, it plays ' Smoke gets in your eyes' when the lid is opened.

    Then & Now

I occasionally have to drive along Coventry Road in Small Heath and parking discipline is usually suspect. But that particular 'parking spot' on the junction takes the biscuit.

    Then & Now

Mary Street, near the junction of Edward Rd, Balsall Heath. My Aunt Betty Middleham ran the café on the left around 1960. What is obvious now is that while all around has disappeared since then, the post box still stands.

    Odeon Perry Barr

Seeing this post reminded me of the time, around 1963 that me & my friends were stopped from entering on the steps of the Odeon by the manager because we were wearing drainpipe jeans. At that time the Villa Cross always showed the same film as the Odeon so, we went there and got in without any...

    Potters Hill Aston

With nothing better to do on a cold winters day, I've put three photos together. I know you are all familiar with these photos separately but, I thought a panoramic view would give a new perspective.

    Lapel Badges

Found this pin badge in the back of a draw yesterday. Would I be right in assuming it's something to do with Rackhams?

    Then & Now

Christ Church, Perry Barr. When I was at Gower St School 1960-61 we used the Holford Drive playing fields for our sports lessons. On the journey there, the school bus used to go round the back of this building to get on the Aldridge Rd. It was virtually a traffic Island (which sold wood). I...
