    Charles Winn & Co

Just to underwrite this thread, I think oldMohawk was right with his blue spot (#7). If RobT doesn't mind me using his map, I would like to point out that the red arrow is where I think the photo #1 was taken from. Although I don't remember that building as Charles Winn premises, the building on...

    Fifties Food

Just came across this very short thread "Fifties Food" from 2012. Had a good chuckle to post #6. Some of the foods I remember eating in the early 50s which makes me wince now was sugar sprinkled on bread & margarine, lard (not dripping) spread on dry bread, eating pomegranates with a pin...

    Long gone shops

Any electronic/radio parts I needed would usually be bought from Hurst St. There were quite a few shops up there but, I can't recall any names.

This is where the Victoria Playhouse stood together with the Park Rd junction.

I know this photo is on another thread but, this was the beautifully ornate Victoria Playhouse cinema in Victoria Rd close to the Park Rd junction.

    Long gone shops

I remember the Home & Colonial shop on Ladypool Rd in the mid 1950s. Also Lesly's watch shop in Steelhouse Lane where I bought my first watch for 9/11d in 1961. They later moved to Martineau St opposite Henry's.

    Clifton Road School Sparkbrook

I've just come across this thread. I was there in 1954-57 and can only remember Mr White who, besides other things, taught us all about the Kon-Tiki expedition of 1947. Also seem to remember a metal cage at the top of the stairs crammed with various sizes of plimsolls. We had to pick a pair from...

    Charles Winn (valves) Ltd

Hi debbpic, in the 25 years I worked at Charles Winn there was never any mention of another Winn factory in Sunderland. Given that there was a 114 year history prior to me joining, anything is possible.

    Charles Winn (valves) Ltd

Hi debbpic, I worked at Charles Winn from Oct 1974 until they closed down in 2000. As you say your Dad retired in 1976 I may not have known him at that time. The works manager was Alf Chaplin when I started followed by Roger Allcock in the 1990s. We did make valves for the M.O.D and Swan Hunter...

    High Street Aston

Funny how one's memory works. Of all the hundreds of times I went up and down High St, I simply have no memory of that Ingall, Parsons, Clive building. You can just make out the white pier caps of the gateway on this still from 1949.

    High Street Aston

Great photos Lyn, just how I remember the old days. Same as Vivienne 14, I could only find Ingalls, Parsons, Clive & Co in Bradford St.

    Alma Street, Six Ways, Aston

Anyone remember the boards in the street that advertised the films showing at local cinemas? These actual boards were in Alma street, just around the corner from Whitehead Street in 1967 showing "A Fistful of Dollars". It was in 1962 on these very boards that me and my mate saw the poster for Dr...

    VICTORIA ROAD ASTON PUB ?

Victoria Park Inn on the corner of Upper Sutton St Lyn. I believe that the 3rd hanging lantern you can see along the road belongs to The White Horse pub.

My wife's parents were married there on Dec 27th 1937 and the signature of the vicar on the certificate looks like JWG? Hathaway.

Cyclo Gear, Aston-who didn't work there?!

About 30 mins ago I posted a photo that was not on this thread. Since I have discovered that Lynn posted it on April 18th (#16) on a similar thread entitled "Norma Quibell...Cyclo Gear Potters Hill Aston" I have deleted it. Should the two threads be combined?

J & CH Evans & Co. Ltd. (Maltsters) Aston & Birchfield

In the 60s I lived at 80 Victoria Road which was right opposite the metal shearing works. It was yet to be built in 1950 so doesn't show on Mike's map. This photo shows a delivery truck in the entrance to the Malt works in Whitehead Road..
