    Liberty & Co., Birmingham

I love the Liberty shops, we went to the small one at Westfield Stratford in London, I could have spent a bomb in there, Sally got mom a lovely pair of silver sewing scissors with ornate handles, in a Liberty print case, really lovely! Sue

    Call the midwife

I think it is making a bit of a comeback, apparently quite a few of the pop singers are knitting backstage. I can knit passably well but mom does it so much better - and quicker - than me. I don't do much. My girls don't knit, never showed any interest, although Kate is wanting to learn now she...

    McCunzells (?) Sweet factory....

The only local place I have heard of that made/makes peanut brittle is Edward (Teddy) Grays in Dudley - most known for their herbal tablets, but having had a quick look, they don't seem to have had factories in Birmingham itself, just the Black Country. Sue

Mark, no consolation, but my great grandmother is proving about as elusive, even with help from our lovely forum members, have had to accept that we will probably never know the full story! Sue

    Tricky Ancestors

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum. It's always tricky to decide whether you have the correct person, especially if you only have limited info to go on, but looking at what you have, it seems probable that you have the correct person. Names are often mis-transcribed or given as a pet or family used...

What a great picture Bernie, I wonder where they were all heading to? And were the ladies all wearing red coats because it was the fashion or was it a uniform for somewhere I wonder? Sue

    Dunlop

Hi Keith, welcome to the forum. My father-in-law worked at Dunlop, would have been around the times you mention, but I'm not sure where exactly he worked, his name was Donald Meredith. His mom Nellie also worked there in the wages dept. Don left to teach at Hereward College in Coventry, but...

    Photos Worth Looking At

At least Brum gets 2nd and 3rd tries, unlike Tamworth, whose historic buildings to a great extent were lost and not replaced! Sue

Roast chestnut vendor Hot potato vendor

Remember the potato man by the New Street ramp, am sure there was a chestnut seller by the old outdoor Bull Ring markets/ St Martins, at least at Christmas, dad and I used to go "up the Bullring" to get the turkey from the market on Xmas Eve and had some to eat on the way home - while poor dad...

    Rookery House, Erdington Council House

Sounds promising Chris. I wonder if they are talking housing development if they could do something like they did with the old workhouse and latterly hospital in tamworth, where the listed parts of the building were maintained and apartments incorporated into them? Sue

MILLARD Lesley George 1896 and siblings.

Only thing I can see for Leslie, is a possible on the 1901 census where he was a boarder with Herbert Millard age 2 and Ellen Millard age 31, at a Chandlers shop, run by Mary Elizabeth Cuthbert at 22 Demesne Street, Poulton cum Seacombe, Cheshire, reg district Wallasey and Birkenhead. He was...

    CHILD, Edith Annie, born@1868

In 1881, it looks as if Edith is living with her grandmother,Jane Trottman, widower, laundress, her father William, listed as son-in-law now a coach painter, brother William aged 17, painter, and Francis, also a scholar and her mother who is now called Jane, listed as daughter, so assumably...
