Y Yes why on a Monday who knows why ? another funny thing was how few people turned up in cars. But we were all young in those days and short of cash and public transport was frequent and cheap. Cheers Tim.

Wow again ! living in Sparkbook for the first 23 of my life I thought I remembered it all then the dancing at Ivor Rd was mentioned and I was there aged about 15 in my prime with one of my mates. Can't remember how many knockbacks we had but then quite a good looking sort did get up for a dance...

Hi Roger if I read this correctly you are the son of my old mate known to me as Bertie ( funnily when I caught up with him at Golden Hillock Rd school he was known as Sam, after his initials for Sylvester Albert Moyden! ). This came as a suprise as I cant recall hearing of him getting married as...

    Old street pics..

Used to throw snowballs at the melt line on the snow covered roofs to speed up the sliding off process and can still recall the whoopf noise as the sheet of snow hit the pavement though I came to Oz in 1961. Happy days and simple pleasures!

    Old street pics..

At first I felt a bit sad to see the pictures of the Highgate /Ladypool Road intersection as it was such a big part of my childhood and teenage growth area. Mom had our greengrocer delivered every week by John Mills. The newsagents next door supplied free ice cream for our street party in...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

Uninteresting gabardine Macs ! Mine was petrol blue with Royal Stewart lining. Set off my oxblood crepe soled shoes, yellow socks and gabardine drainpipe trousers a treat. I sometimes wake up screaming !!

Hi John good to know someone else hated Golden Hillock Rd School. Fortunately I passed the exam that led me to Handsworth Tech. from 1952 to 1954. Whilst that school also had corporal punishment ,as did most in that period, it didn't seem so ingrained and from memory was only practiced by a few...

    Thank you’s for help

It's happened again, a site popping up again after lying dormant for a couple years I just love this aspect. The down side however is when you realize that you haven't seen some of the old posters for sometime. I'm no chicken myself and having just taken on a rescue dog at the age of 80 ( me not...

    Where did you live

Just bumped into site, always finding something new on this forum ,which is great. Born 1938 at 7 Tillingham St Sparkbrook and lived there until I came to Oz in 1961. The house and the area have since gone and maybe for the best as it was all going a bit downhill. Cheers Tim

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

I may be wrong ( usually am ) but does the story go that the scrapings off the HP vats wee the basis of Marmots. The same is said here in Oz but with the variation that the companies involved were Carlton United Breweries and Vegemite. Cheers Tim

Libraries : My First Visit To A Library.

The story had everything in it, a soldier,a witch, treasure and three dogs guarding the treasure. If I remember it well the first had eyes as big as saucers, the second as big as plates and the third as big as milestones. The soldier had to get the dogs to sit on his cloak whilst he stole the...

    Electric Trams

The mystery marks are the steel markers to show the designated crossing areas of the intersection. These were either with traffic lights or Belisha Beacons. This was before Zebra Crossings. What caught my eye at first was the B57 Bomber flying over in the top left hand corner ! Cheers Tim

    Stratford Road

So sorry Alexander but I'm unable to help. I feel a bit ashamed that I was ( still am ) so self centered that I have no knowledge of someone to whom I lived relatively close to for 23 years. In my defense my wife calls me Mr. Haverchat as I readily talk to anyone I meet but I never become...

    Cannon Hill Park

I take it that the cricket was being played on a Saturday as I recall that one of the duties of the horse mounted "Parkie" was to remind visitors that ball games were not permitted on Sunday. This we were told as children was one of the conditions imposed when the park was gifted to the City of...
