    'Orse Road

Hi Maurice, "this is only a feeling in me water" as my mom used to say but I feel your Dad may have been employed directly by one of the railways. It is only based on when I traveled to and from Handsworth for school I would see metal signs (about 1 foot square) hung in the windows of shops and...

    Bicycle manufacturers in Birmingham

Thanks for the photo Phil. At one stage in my life I spent a lot of time gazing into shop windows like that. Priory Cycles had two shops that had to be checked out a couple of times a week for their displays of such beauties as Bianchi with the crackled paint finish. Always bought my bits and...

    New unseen photos of brum

[And thanks from me too young lady. Had seen it before but nice to go over it again. The sad thing is the fact that many of the old posters are no longer on the scene which makes me wonder if they have dropped of the twig (as they say!) or may be they are busy with other endeavours and will pop...

    Chapel Tavern

I went to work in that area 1960/61 and on my first day I was surprised to hear the question asked by someone "Are you going to The Chapel at lunch time ?". I kept my head down and thought I was going to be working with a load of bible thumpers. To my great pleasure I was put straight as to it...

All the coal bags I ever Saw had 2 handles, they were made of rope which went all round the bags in a double loop that also reinforces the bag. Very simple but very effective, some clever member may come with a picture. Cheers Tim.

Hey remember if you threw a bit of salt on the fire you got blue and other colours flaring up, chased away those little dragons that lived in those tiny caves in the fire. My medication kicks in about this time! Cheers

    Milk

I was one of those sickly kids that caught anything going so was dosed up with all the treatments mentioned except for Fennings Fever Treatment, unless I got it mixed with something else " as a treat". In my early childhood we had an elderly aunt staying with us WWII period and she lived in a...

    Aston Hall

Also heard the claim that the guns in Cannon Hill fired on Prince Rupert forces on Camp Hill but it was doubtful that either were within range. Mind you on a clear day with the wind in the right direction ? Cheers Tim

    Great Hampton Street

Thanks for that Lyn. It's a bit weird for pelican, we are very lucky where we live her in our part of Oz as they are quite common in our local rivers and inlets. Though a bit awkward on land they are as graceful as swans on the water and also in flight. Cheers Tim

Damp coal also weighed heavier. our Coalman had set of scales on the back of the cart and would weigh the bags before delivery, any shortages were made up from a small loose amount which included bits that fell onto the trucks platform. My Mom and neighboring housewives would check each bag and...

Wacaden Dairy Wathes Cattell & Gurden Dairy

Garden, cookie. My Mom's first job was with them as a Dairy Analysis. She left them in 1930 when she married my Dad. When she went to work during the war (WWII ) it was as the cook in a factory ( Gold's ) which was on the other side of the yard from Wacaden's. Life's a bit strange isn't it
