Hi everyone, Rowan kindly put me in touch with a very helpful person, a Mrs Betty Foster I asked her if she has any records of my grandfather and his brothers having been placed at the orphanage during the First World War after their father's death at the battle of Loos in 1915. Josiah Mason's Orphanage

Hi Doris, I can't express how happy I am that you have written to me. I think we can, together, discover what happened to young Winnifred Bayliss, while her brothers were in the orphanage. A helpful person on this forum gave me a link to someone who has more information about who was resident...

    Josiah Mason's Orphanage

Hi gothic Terrace, Yes! My granddad David Ernest Bayliss did indeed have a sister Winifred Doris Bayliss born in 1915. Unfortunately, my mom--Sylvia Bayliss, knew little about her. We don't even know what happened to her when her brothers were put into the orphanage after their father's death...

    Birmingham boxers

A friend of the family--Jack Kirby was a Birmingham boxer before the war (as were one or more of his brothers). Jack had a junk yard in Frankfort street, Hockley in the 1960's. I have searched online in vain for any photos of Jack; none to be found.

    Bridge Street West

Wonderful pictures, Astoness. The first picture on post #18 looks a lot like the houses along Frankfort street at that time (the next street over). I was only a young lad when we lived on that street, but that picture brought back a flood of memories. Do you remember Frankfort street? Kevin

    Lucas Great King Street demolition

Thank you for the pictures, Wales. My sentiments exactly Lloyd; my grandfather used to call Birmingham the city of a thousand trades. My mother Sylvia Rose Fellows (nee Bayliss) worked at Lucas in the early 1960's. It helped put food on the table during a time when we lived in an old decrepit...

    Fisher & Ludlows factory

Hello, I have not seen the Fisher & Ludlows factory as a main topic, so I thought I would start a thread for those who may have worked there or remember people who did. My Grandfather worked there after the War, he worked throughout the 1950's, and 1960's in the tool making area, I believe...

    Josiah Mason's Orphanage

Great pictures! They give me a much better sense of what the orphanage was like. My grandfather David Bayliss, and his brothers Edward Bayliss and William Bayliss were sent to that orphanage soon after their father Frank Henry Bayliss was killed (in 1915), during World War One. Thanks for sharing

Cromwell, last April, I asked what my grandfather, Harry George Fellows' regiment was in India, based on his uniform button (it happens to be the Rifle Brigade). Thanks. We moved on to the death of his brother Joseph Fellows in World War 1. In looking that up, you gave some names of other...
