Another regular haunt of mine in the mid sixties. I'm still motorcycling but my local cafe is now 30 miles away in Wellesbourne.

I remember working on them at 'Central Motors' in Charlotte st. The 180 was quite luxurious compared to some of the other models on offer. I was impressed with the engine as to how smooth it was.

I bet those Taxis' are still on the road today pumping out black diesel and they will be ticking over whilst waiting for a customer.

Great. Thanks for the info. I was familiar with 'Telma Retarders' back in the 70's. So it must have been similar to the Land Rover 'Drum Transmission' brake but used a disc and caliper instead. Thanks for the info. Who'd have thought that transmission brakes could be so interesting.

Hi Dave An interesting picture of your working life you have painted there. Thanks The disc - brake that you fitted to the prop on a Leyland national, was that similar in operation to the 'Telma Retarder' that was popular on coaches?

The (rotton) VW has a 'Smithfield Garage' sticker in the rear window. I may have worked on that one.

Ford Cortina 2 litre lurking in the side road. Manufactured in 1971. Road tax expired March 1984.

Looking at the telephone numbers I have found that; 422 is Quinton exchange and 554 is Handsworth exchange. I looked up Victoria road, Handsworth and it is still a garage. Picture attached.
