    Centenary Square development 2017-18

It was certainly not the best view that we have experienced from a hotel. However, everything else was OK and we were out most of the day, so it was dark and the workmen had finished when we returned. Only 7-8 minutes walk to New Street Station. Dave.

    Centenary Square development 2017-18

First photo in #22 from Ellbrown shows a "glittering building" behind the civic building which is the Holiday Inn by Express. Stayed there for 3 nights this week and photo below shows the view from our bedroom window on the 10th floor, looking towards the Library. Workmen were digging a very...

Well done. It is Guinness. The advert was "After work have a Guinness on the way back"...

    See Birmingham by Post Card

I have this same postcard. There is a stamp on the back but unfortunately it is not franked. The stamp is a George V green halfpenny. This, plus the clothes worn in the photo, perhaps suggests 1910 or soon after. Dave.

    A Birmingham Christmas Wish List

My wish would be to hire a bus in its original blue and cream colours from the Transport Museum Wythall. It would be routed as a 1A and I would sit on the top deck, seat by the front window, and be driven down Broad Street to Acocks Green. Chums from the BHF who are interested in buses could...

    Birmingham Cinemas

"Fort Algiers", the film advertised on the side of the Scala Cinema, was released in 1953 therefore the photograph could be from around that period. Dave

    Advertising in the past

We used to feed my daughter with Cadburys Milk Chocolate in order to aid her growing. 6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot and eventually 9 foot tall. Here is a recent picture of my daughter and I. Dave.

    See Birmingham by Post Card

Hagley Road postcard which was franked in 1905. I'm not really familiar with the Hagley Road so I don't know exactly where this was taken. I wouldn't have wanted to be one of the window cleaners working at such heights. Sorry for the dirty sky. Does anyone have a "today" photograph? Dave.

    Centenary Square development 2017-18

Thanks Ellbrown. The Hyatt looks very impressive but I think that's been there a year or two. Hotel rooms are well sound-insulated these days so I expect that they don't get too much noise from all the building work outside. Dave.

    Centenary Square development 2017-18

Looking at #14 there are various buildings behind the Civic building on Broad Street. Directly behind is a glittering structure (Hotel?), then panning right a flatter building, then one with "+" signs all over it (Mailbox?). Grateful to know what they are. Thanks. Dave.

    See Birmingham by Post Card

Picked up this somewhat unusual postcard today. It shows the opening ceremony of the "Africa and the East" exhibition in Birmingham. There is no writing on the back but I believe the date would be around 1910 and that the event was organised by the Church Missionary Society. I have no idea...

    Buses And Coaches.

It's quite common to see railway engines with the name of somebody famous on them but this morning, at RHS Wisley in Surrey, I saw two double-decker buses with the names of Sir Winston Churchill and Charles Dickens on the front. The buses were from Brighton in West Sussex. I wondered if this...

    Various street pics

This postcard of Five Ways franked in September 1905 is of very similar vintage to that in #255 (November 1906). It has however been taken in the opposite direction to #255 and therefore I assume it must be taken from Broad Street looking towards the Hagley Road. Dave.

    Paradise development 2017

Hello Ellbrown, Thanks for all your recent photographs of the Paradise development. Can I just check, as an out-of-towner, that if I wanted to walk from New Street Station to the Hall of Memory and Broad Street, that when I reached the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery I could turn onto the new...

    Cadbury's Bournville Factory

I must admit that I had never heard of Rowheath lake or the Pavilion, plus its association with Cadbury's, until I bought this undated postcard on Saturday. Some information on the Pavilion is provided below. Dave. Rowheath Pavilion heart of the community Our History Rowheath...

    New Street City Centre Birmingham

A view of New Street from opposite the Birmingham Mail newspaper offices in the direction of the Town Hall. Not sure of the date but the buses could be pre-war? Need a bus expert to help. The bus at the front is a number 5 to Perry Common. Dave.

    Cadbury's Bournville Factory

Rhythmic dancing by employees at the Bournville Works. There is no date or stamp on this postcard but I would guess it is late 20s to early 30s. There is an upright piano being played on the lawn. Dave.

    Renting Tellies

This advert for Radio Rentals was shown in the Sunday Mercury in March 1959. It shows the disparity between renting from 8 shillings and fourpence per week or buying from 67 guineas. There were many Radio Rentals shops in Birmingham with the city one being at 13 Piccadilly Arcade. Dave.

    Pageant July 1938

There is a thread called "Pageant in the Park, July 24th 1938" where other pictures of Egbert are shown in #24. Dave Edit. Threads now merged.
