    Radio

The only radio broadcaster that I listen to nowadays is LBC, and that is in the car. LBC used to stand for "London Broadcasting Company" but now it is advertised as "Leading Britain's Conversation" so perhaps it has extended its reception area. The programmes are mainly news and topics delivered...

    Birmingham buses

Hi Radiorails. Any reason why the headlights were at different heights? The number 32 bus from Greys would have taken me back to Hall Green Parade. Can confirm that the photo was taken on Saturday 8th September 1962. Dave.

    Talking Pictures TV

In the past 2 to 3 weeks we have had a couple of old films on Channel 81 where one of the stars is still alive today. "We'll meet again" was made in 1943 and the star was of course Vera Lynn, now aged 101. Also noticed in Hobson's Choice, made in 1953-4, that one of the younger daughters, Vicky...

    Radio

Claim to fame coming up: I actually shook hands with Jean Metcalfe. She visited a local lecture society, in Surrey, and gave a talk on her work at the BBC. As I was the treasurer of the society I had to present her with a cheque and we shook hands. I remember that it was a very interesting talk...

I can read most of the advert but not all of it. "Look for the ------plus label on wash and wear". Dave

    'Terms' children use

Not so much what children say but what they sometimes do. A short article in The Times today about a schoolgirl in California who added her grandfather's ashes to a batch of cookies she was baking. I have two grandchildren living in California so might end up being the "special ingredient" in a...

    Hall Green Schools

Hello OuterCircleBus. I was at York Road School from 1948 to 1954, with Miss Dunton as Head Teacher. Did we overlap? Dave.

    Centenary Square development 2017-18

Apparently, at the Conservative Party Conference, it was said that anyone who could negotiate their way on foot from New Street Station to the International Convention Centre on Broad Street, without getting lost, should be put in charge of the Brexit negotiations as it would be an easier task...

    Tolkien's Birmingham

A Blue Plaque was erected in 1997 to say that Tolkien had stayed at the Plough and Harrow Hotel, Hagley Road in June 1916. Also found a report that this was the night before he travelled to France to fight in the WW1 battlefields. Tolkien was 24 at the time. Is there still a Tolkien restaurant...

Museum of the Jewellery Quarter - 75-80 Vyse Street, Hockley, Birmingham, B18 6HA.

Purchased a book-mark at the museum which gives more information on the gold jewellery that was made by Smith and Pepper. Products included: bracelets, brooches, pendants, necklets, earrings, crosses etc., etc. Specialities were Bamboo, Nellie Stewart and Slave Bangles. Found that Nellie Stewart...

Museum of the Jewellery Quarter - 75-80 Vyse Street, Hockley, Birmingham, B18 6HA.

Visited this museum yesterday. Staying in Solihull and got a train that went direct to the Jewellery Quarter station. The museum is only 5 minutes walk away in Vyse Street. We went on a guided tour that lasted 75 minutes. It's mainly about the history of the Smith and Pepper factory. The guide...

    New forum version

Hi Warren, I simply selected "Members" and the screen then shows those with the most messages, the most likes and also todays birthdays. The age of the person's birthday is shown but I have cropped these out as it would reveal the actual date of birth. Dave.

    New forum version

Personally, I would omit the column "Todays Birthdays" which can be viewed under "Members". Just thinking that it adds information for potential unwanted identity theft. Dave.

    Diane Leather

Obituary in the Times today for the athlete Diane Leather. She was the first woman to perform a record-breaking sub five-minute mile. This was achieved at the Alexander Sports Ground in Perry Barr, Birmingham on May 29th 1954. She was wearing her Birchfield Harriers sports-kit. Diane Leather was...

    Winterbourne House & Garden

The BBC weather forecast this morning came from Winterbourne Gardens. I don't think that I have ever been there so must try and visit the next time that I'm in Birmingham. Dave.

    Stratford Road

Thanks Phil. Those are the ones I was referring to. In your photograph they run from Springfield Road almost to College Road. A Birmingham Municipal Bank was situated where Lloyds Bank is seen now. I held my first (paltry) savings there. Dave.

    Stratford Road

Regarding first photo in #205; originally what was Sparkhill Congregational Church in the background and now a curry centre. At least the main structure of the church has been maintained. Travelling just past College Road on the Stratford Road, travelling towards town, there was a parade of...

    Stratford Road

I also wrote in my diary on 4th August 1958 that the 46 bus route is now discontinued. This ran from the Hall Green terminus, along the Stratford Road, to Station Street. I seem to remember that the 46 bus had older rolling stock than the more frequently used 37 which went from Hall Green to...

    Stratford Road

The cinemas that I visited on the Stratford Road were the Rialto, Robin Hood, Piccadilly and the Springfield; frequency in that order. The Rialto was the closest and most popular for me. The Springfield was fairly close but always seemed to have films on Old Mother Riley. I have just looked at...

So it was you who picked all the blackberries, Maurice. One of my earliest memories is taking the Midland Red from Hall Green Parade with my parents to go to Monkspath to pick blackberries. This would be in the late forties. I think we alighted at Dog Kennel Lane. Completely built up now. Dave.
