    Clarenden arms pub

Thanks John, I still can't bring it to mind, as I said mom & dad used the Clarendon every weekend and when I was an adult went in there quite a few times. Funny how the memory works.

Hi Maz, sorry I can't help with the names of anyone at the Welfare, we used to get the thick orange juice and cod liver oil there. I will look for the book later.

    The retreat...aston

Sorry Alan, I don't know the names of the people at Robbo's Cafe, I never went in as it was so close to home, the only things we bought to eat "on the hoof" were fish & chips, mainly chips, and the occasional baked potato.

Phil, sorry but you are wrong Upper Sutton Street started across the road from Park Lane, with The Eagle pub on the right hand side and Robbo's Cafe on the left. Sutton Street ran from Park Lane, bent left and went down to Aston Road. Brenda you are right about the Welfare Centre in Sutton...

Brenda, you are right about Mrs. Griggs shop, and the opening to Jennings, after I came off my computer yesterday I gave it some more thought and remembered the shop. The photo was on the right hand side of Parliament Street running from Upper Webster Street to Park Lane. When I was a little...

Lyn, thanks for posting. The lst pic is the corner of Parliament Street and Park Lane. When I was growing up it was a secondhand shop I think the lady who ran it was called Kate, but it had been bricked up by the time the photo was taken. I am not sure about the 2nd photo but it may be the...

Hi Maz, nice to see you back on the Forum, the outdoor you can see beyond the Talford Arms was run by Mr. Roberts for many years, and it was on the corner of Talford Street/Webster Street. chewing gum machines

My mother used to hate me chewing gum, she said it would take the enamel off your teeth. Another old chestnut was if you swallowed gum it would wrap round your innards and kill you.

For Alan, my Wakelin's Street Guide isn't dated but it was 9d old money and the phone no. EAST 1260 so it was published before February 1971 when decimalisation came in.

    Postcard of unknown family

I can't help with your Scholefield Street query, but there was a bicycle shop in Park Lane, just off Parliament Street, as you turned right into Park Lane from Parliament Street, there were 3 or 4 houses then the bicycle shop and I think next door was Burtons paper shop.
