    New John Street

My maternal grandparents lived at No.46 New John Street, about 4 houses up from the side of Elkington Street School, it was previously a small pub The Hope & Anchor, I would love to see a photo of when it was a pub.

    Atkinson Ale

Atkinsons Brewery was in Queens Road, Aston, I started work there in 1953 as a junior shorthand typist, my first job after leaving school in December 1952. The brewery on Lichfield Road just before the Swanpool was Smiths - can't recall the initials.

    Charlie Chaplin At Aston Hippodrome

Hi Paul welcome to the Forum. I think it is a common misconception that Laurel & Hardy stayed at the Bartons Arms when they appeared at the Aston Hipp. However, I have read on a number of occasions this is untrue, they stayed in a hotel in the city centre, although they did have a drink in the...

    Jacy News Theatre Dale End

Yes the News Theatre was where shown in the lovely old photos, and the Jacey was in Station Street, I used to take my son there most Saturday afternoons for a few years when he around 5 to 8 years old, he loved the old short films and had a very infectious laugh, people used to turn in their...

    Dance halls

I remember Stella's bar very well, think I have posted about it somewhere on the Forum. Stella is behind the bar on the photos. It opened about the mid 1950s very sophisticated (or so we thought) for the time. When anyone offered Stella a drink should we say "I'll have a bob's worth". The...

Newspapers : From Birmingham Post 150 years ago

I had a crinoline wedding dress it was lovely, but it was difficult to sit down in, as it lifted up at the back. Luckily I only had to look good and didn't have to do any work of any sort.

    Park Lane...Aston

Hi Carl, yes it was in the late 50s and early 60s when we were friendly with Pearl, Matty and Roy. So sorry to hear that Matt has died and that Pearl is now very frail, they were a few years older than me. Time takes its toll unfortunately.

    Park Lane...Aston

Carl, it's a small world isn't it? I don't remember the younger sister Joy, but remember Pearl who married Matty Morris out of Parliament Street, my ex husband and I were friendly with them when we were young, they had a little back house up that entry then moved out to Cannock I think. Also...

    Park Lane...Aston

Carl thanks for posting and evoking happy memories of Park Lane. The vacant site on the corner of Park Lane and Potters Hill was thanks to Herr Hitler. It was always a bomb site when I was growing up. I don't know whether there was just one raid on Park Lane but there was a lot of damage from...

    Dixon Road School

The little boy holding the board on the front row seems to have a "Little Lord Faunteroy" collar on his suit.

    Items that have faded away

In 1965 I bought a dark brown astrakhan 3/4 length coat, with a shawl collar, it was about £30 roughly two weeks wages at the time, I absolutely loved it and felt a million dollars wearing it. I had it for ages and when it started to show signs of wear, the curly bits coming loose, I stuck them...

Re post 3115 I am wondering whether the photo of Avenue Road, is actually Avenue Road, Aston, and the church is St. Mary's fronting Aston Road.

    Items that have faded away

I went once to a public washing baths in Grosvenor Road, Aston, as a child, it was awful, the taps on the bath had a locking mechanism which was unlocked by a large woman who was like a prison warden, and we only had about 4 inches of water. The soap provided was about 2 inches x 1 inch. I...

    City Hospital, Little Bromwich 1911

I too spent time in Little Bromwich Isolation Hospital when I was 4 years old also with diptheria, I remember the bright red blankets, and being wheeled in our beds to the verandah. My parents could only look through a glass but I seem to remember them coming on the ward with gowns and face...
