I think the photo of the boy-and other photos of unattended children throughout the Borough-were a gift to the developers to illustrate how reckless Birmingham had become and needed a good knocking-down. By them and at a serious price also!

I've just done a rummage through the index on the mini-video documentary site MACE ARCHIVE, and there are just two snips so far which show Spiceal Street at or near its junction with Edgbaston Street during the 1950's owing to its proximity to the church (opposite)...

Aidan, i have a photocopy of a book picture of that junction in 1938.Its a side-on view of the corner premises since the focus is intended to be Jamaica Row which was/is the continuation of Spiceal Street the other side of Edgbaston Street. There was a whole sequence of shoe shops running down...

That is correct Georgie. We are building up a door-by-door picture ofCorporation Street very efficiently now.Only a few hundred pictures more to go. Just meant inadvertantly having to hi-jack the threadstarters purpose all those years ago. Maybe one of the Moderators could shift everything over...

Its the original colour postcard (not my posting) in which you can see Lewis's as the white building on the left. Eventually Rackhams ran (as it still does) all the way along from the front door of Dolcis (with the Cobden above) to the corner of Bull Street where it originally had its front door...

Another brainwave. Here's the Royal Institute of British Architects' photo-portrait of the Cobden plus Dolcis downstairs. The whole building-without Dolcis I expect (!) was built in 1883 by one William Doubleday (1846-1938). Date of this picture is 1955.

Here's the very picture of the Cobden about to be demolished. 1957 it is. Part of the name Dolcis is still remaining. Sorry can't to much better in a hurry without a proper scanner. Richie.

The hotel on the left is the Cobden, part of which had the top part of Dolcis. The original bit of Rackham's is on the left next to the parked (?) bus. The Cobden and everything on the left was swept away in Rackams massive expansion in 1959. Have pictures but it may take a few days to find...
