    Pub Quiz

Fancy a pub quiz? Have a go at my quiz for 1958 which I put together for a friend born in that year. Don't look at the answers until the end and be honest, how many did you get? https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/pub-quiz/1958.htm

    Pub Jukebox

I think most of them are available to listen on You Tube. I did start off embedding the videos on the page but it made it quite complicated and sometimes the video or You Tube account hosting the video gets deleted causing more problems. I possibly could provide samples of the really old records...

    Pub Jukebox

Yes, in fact I put the record in there because of that drum solo - haven't written that disc up yet. Takes me ages to write about them all. The drum break was mentioned on an interesting Radio 4 programme "Add to Playlist," hosted by Cerys Matthews and Jeffrey Boakye. It is broadcast on Friday...

    Racquet Court Bath Street

Thomas "Fence" Evans was bankrupt in October 1868. Should have stuck to racquets, or perhaps become a fencing racketeer.

    Racquet Court Bath Street

This item is from Birmingham Daily Post - Saturday 01 July 1995, a few inaccuracies but still interesting. I suspect the first court mentioned was the one in Sheepcote Street.

    Racquet Court Bath Street

It must be a typo rather than an error, but it does say the Racquet Court Inn was established c.1747 - according to the map resources I have the site was a field then.

    Historical directories

I am not sure if the first directory [1767] for Birmingham is online but, in case of interest, I have transcribed the publicans at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/index.html#1767-Sketchleys-Directory

    IN OUR GARDEN 2023

I planted a strawberry tree two years ago. After a slow start, it's going well now. Trouble is it takes about another five years before any sign of fruit!

    Racquet Court Bath Street

I only looked into this place last night because Tom Kenny sent me a message requesting some information. I did not set out to further discredit Joseph McKenna but the information provided in this section has several errors. I have only referred to this book a couple of times and on each...

    Wellington street, Winson Green

And just as I was typing that my inbox pinged with a bill for my SSL DV Certificate - that's the little padlock on the address bar to let people know my site is safe - just came in. A mere £106.79p for 12 months. I definitely am mad.

Quite. I keep shelling out fees to keep my site going but it is now £600 per year - I must be mad.

Thanks. It would seem that a number of local history sites are disappearing, perhaps due to Facebook pages popping up.

    The King's Head : Digbeth

I am including the entry for this pub as featured in Joseph McKenna's "Central Birmingham Pubs Volume 2." Misspelling two out of the three landlords mentioned is hardly a big deal but to completely miss the importance of this house is unforgivable. And all that time he had in the libary! For a...
