    Women On The Streets

A hot topic this week and, in my humble opinion, about time. Over the years Birmingham has arguably been one of the worst places in which town planning has demonstrated little consideration for women's safety on the streets. There were always dark alleys but the underpasses created in the 1960s...

    Borderlines

Cheers Maurice, I think it is even more complicated by people. For example, the house in which I grew up was technically in Old Hill but I identified with Cradley Heath. A key reason for asking the question is that I am doing a little work on Brearley Street and would not wish to upset somebody...

    Borderlines

Where does one district end and another one begin. There are parish maps with boundaries clearly marked so it is easy to determine which parish a given street was in. However, take Brearley Street for example, where EXACTLY does it leave New Town and enter Hockley? This crops up in many streets...

    The Sailors Return

I have just typed a paragraph on this pub which may be of interest : "The name of the house suggests that a mariner returned to Birmingham with sufficient booty to open a public-house. The earliest mention I have seen of the Sailor's Return is an entry in the licence register dated 1819 in...

    Farm Street Hockley

Joseph Linforth was running it as the Castle Tavern in 1859 but advertised the business as he was in a financial pickle. He was later bankrupt.
