    South Road Sparkbrook

Thanks, I have a pic of the pub but South Road is seemingly poorly documented - visually at least!

    South Road Sparkbrook

If anybody has any old photographs or stories of South Road that they are willing to share it would be appreciated. I wanted to put something together for a former resident who was brought up in this locale after being born during WW2. Her family name was Gore.

    Crown Inn - Villa Street

BTW Edith Houghton, wife of Arthur, later moved to Rugby where she kept the Royal Oak and Red Lion, most of her life running pubs.

    Crown Inn - Villa Street

It is possible that the name on the token was the abbreviated name by which Arthur William Houghton was known - he was a son and publican of the Crown Inn during the Edwardian period.

    Crown Inn - Villa Street

I was tucked up by 10.30 - cycled to Worcester at 9am to look at the elephants and Covid installation in the Cathedral, meandered back on bike calling at the Fox Inn at Monkwood Green, the New Inn at Sinton Green and the Fruiterer's Arms at Uphampton. Wobbled home, cooked dinner and watched the...

Imagined map of Birmingham in 1730

I clicked on "buy print" but got a warning from my Malware software saying they had blocked a Trojan. Careful folks!

    Kynoch Cycling Club

2nd place with that time suggests that the competition was sluggish!

The Gothic - Great Hampton Street

I would concur with this, except I would not be so diplomatic!

Newspapers : Newspaper Archive new issues of local journals

Eric, searching is free and, if you do not wish to subscribe [around £72 per year] you can just buy a month's worth and cram in a block of research.

Cradley Heath ... now you're talking. As a Heathen, this will float my boat! Thanks for the update Mike. I subscribe to the site but forget to look what is new.

    Kynoch Cycling Club

The timing is not quite right - I know I can do 10 miles in 25ish minutes which is about club standard. Although bikes are nippier these days he would still be doing 5 miles quicker than 16.18. I have seen Victorian times of over 22mph on rough roads.

Bird in Hand pub Norton street/Devonshire street, 1911

Interesting. I have not looked into this tavern. In Post #4 it is said to be a Holt pub but the photograph shows Atkinson's etched glass. Also it does not appear to be a corner pub [as indicated by Mike] with its central entrance. I cannot read the licensee plate but I would doubt if this is the...

Coaching Inns in the 19th century

A most enjoyable read and an excellent journey/quest. There were many highlights but perhaps your most fortuitous was the 'final' visit to the Inn at Mona. Tremendous stuff.

Links: Library Of Birmingham Web Site

Reduced hours, librarians, catalogue fails etc. means that I cannot see me EVER using the Wolfson Centre. I have a website that devotes a lot of space to the history of Birmingham and if somebody like me cannot face the tedious and frustrating process now in place then it highlights what a...

    Great Hampton Street

Doh, the price of being a chump! However, I just tried that and it threw up another GHStreet thread : https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/great-hampton-street.25507/

    Great Hampton Street

Frankenstein, along with his creator Mary Shelley, were veggies. Maybe influenced some in the 19th century. Mind you, it is said that Pythagoras was a veggie. Indeed, at one time those who eschewed meat were known as Pythagoreans.

    Great Hampton Street

Yes Lyn, I think the bank, like many other buildings in the street, is being renovated.

    Great Hampton Street

Weird, I typed "Great Hampton Street" in the search box and went through several pages without seeing a thread with the street in the title.
