    Pubs Of The Past

Well, it is not the Old Crown at Deritend. The building may be old but not as a licensed tavern. If we are talking about a pub still trading then it has to be one of the building's left alone whilst many were being rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Something like ...

    Pubs Of The Past

I have done some work on all of these pubs. I must have got side-tracked [again] as I only have the early years of the Fox on my site. Must try to put them all on soon : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/hurst-street/fox-inn.htm

    Swan Inn/White Swan/Spring Gardens - Floodgate Street

Thanks for the feedback and I am pleased that you found something interesting. BTW I suspect that Joseph Wallis moved to the Spring Gardens from the New Inn on Bromsgrove Street. I certainly have a Joseph Wallis there in 1803 and 1810.

I don't think there is a complete set of books etc., but a good deal of material is on Ancestry. Not that easy to find some people however!

    High Street, Saltley

I have uploaded some information on this photograph at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/high-street-saltley/adderley-arms.htm - quite an important bit of social history.

    Write it down

Going back to the original theme of "writing it down," I was rather flattered last week on a South African blog ..... "Without people like him, these stories will be lost forever and I salute him for this! In years to come people will understand it, value it and talk about it. Why? Because he...

    Bricklayers' Arms - Adderley Street

When trawling newspapers, I like a juicy story about a pub and this one has a real jewel in that the publican was involved in an audacious robbery. https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/adderley-street/bricklayers-arms.htm

Petrol pumps & filling stations of the past

Recently when out cycling I felt the need for a sugar hit so nipped into a garage for a flapjack. I walked up to the counter in the shop fully clad in cycling gear, still wearing helmet etc. The woman said: "any fuel?" as if I looked like a motorist! I replied "yes, this flapjack is my fuel."...

Petrol pumps & filling stations of the past

When I was at school I had a part-time job filling up cars at a petrol station. Shortly afterwards people got duped to pay more and fill it themselves!

Adderley Arms Inn - Adderley Street

I have added a little bit on this pub at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/adderley-street/adderley-arms-inn.htm It was destroyed in the war - has anybody got a photograph they are willing to share?

Waggon and Horses - Adderley Street

High turnover of licensees has always been prevalent in the licensed trade. Even today there is a rule-of-thumb that tenants will last for nine years. That is three years to get the place running as they would like it, three years to enjoy it, and three years to grow tired of it. In 19th...

White Swan - Birchall Street, Deritend

Yes Mike. I do not know the full story of Nigel Barker but he has been involved in Birmingham pubs for decades. He was manager of the Barton's Arms many moons ago. He then kept pubs in the Bloxwich area before spearheading a real ale revival in the city centre by running The Wellington on...
