Sparkhill Police Station [including officers from Acock's Green, Hay Mills and Yardley]

I acquired a 1905 photograph of police officers at Sparkhill Police Station and with the amazing help of Matt Pooler [he runs the Worcestershire Police History] website, he provided a full list of names. As I had a good pic I could zoom in on the collar numbers. Anyway, for those interested in...

    Union Inn - Berners Street

You couldn't make it up .... two different people, one named Julius and another named Caesar, both with a connection to this pub. See : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/berners-street/union-inn.htm

    Union Inn - Berners Street

I have picked this one out to help clear up some people's misunderstanding of the term beer house. Reading between the lines of some posts, some think that they were of low status, a rough hole with little repute. But here is a good example of a beer house that was well constructed, occupied a...

Yes, Lyn posted this photograph in the Berners Street thread.

    New Inns Berners St Lozells

Damn, I got sidetracked again. I was more interested at the moment in an old photograph I have of the Union Inn - and only because of a link to the Alma Tavern. Never simple.

    New Inns Berners St Lozells

See my other post on the Shooting Club. Possibly the same person featured in both photographs. This image is another curious item. Why such a long line of brewery vehicles? If it really was May Day then perhaps they were on their way to some sort of procession/carnival? The New Inns had not long...

    New Inns Berners St Lozells

The photograph of the Shooting Club is intriguing. The Billy Cock hats were more of a Victorian fashion than Edwardian and there is some transition in this image. A few straw boaters and caps are more like the early Edwardian period. Arthur Wade Edge is listed as the licensee in the early 20th...

    Pubs Of The Past

Kelsey's didn't have too many pubs in Birmingham, the Trees on Bath Row probably the most notable. This house in Heneage Street was the Shepherd and Shepherdess.

    Pubs Of The Past

Mike, I don't log in that often, generally when I have got something to post. I have just clocked your message. Perhaps e-mail me if urgent! It looks like an offie in the pic. It was M&B in the Edwardian period. The 1906 rate book shows no name - generally they did enter the house name. By the...

    Minor Theatre - Allison Street

I have squeezed a poster into a page at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/allison-street/ is there a theatre buff on the forum who knows about this place? The poster is 184 years-old which is nice.

    Carpenters' Arms - Adelaide Street

Could I be a pedant and ask a moderator to change the title of this thread to Carpenters' Arms - Adelaide Street. I have uploaded some info on this place at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/adelaide-street/carpenters-arms.htm Cheers, Kieron

    Pubs Of The Past

Oh dear, I have spotted many errors in the captions. On a technical note, I think the forum may receive complaints when publishing entire books which may still be in copyright.

    Baines the Bakers

After receiving a nice pic, I did a little on these two firms, though I do not know why the brothers established separate firms? Anyway, if of interest my blurb is at : https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/ashted-row/index.html#Baines

    Pub maps and plans

Thanks for posting this. I have a few of these plans for the Black Country and they are very useful. Most were produced for discussion at board meeting during which members could visually check on the competition and viability of any future business. The licensing justices would also have such a...

    Pubs Of The Past

Oh, I must have misread the question as we are straying outside of old Birmingham and into the 'hinterlands'. Like the Old Crown, the Green Man was not always a pub, though it was licensed by 1802, perhaps earlier? Regarding the Great Stone Inn, one should use 'formerly' rather than 'originally'...
