I found this site a few weeks ago and it really is fascinating. The green men are cited as carvings which appear on many buildings built in Birmingham in the Victorian period. They are depicted as having vegetation sprouting from their heads and there are many of them around the city on...
Well done Viv. I will check this out later on. There is going to be a lot of coverage about the upcoming Anniversary of WW1 and
we will all learn a lot more about the war and the terrible toll it took on the countries that sent men to fight in it and women who were in other capacities.
Re: Alice May Hughes
Hi Carolina: This could be Alice If she was born in 1929. which is possible if she was l6 when her son was born. This from Genes Reunited site Searching under Birth and Death category. ALICE MAY HUGHES England & Wales deaths...
Going by the list of old pubs on the Midland Pubs site there is no mention of a pub with the name asked about on their list of pubs: https://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/birmingham/spring-hill/ As Phil says it may have been the Queens Head before.
Final update on the renovations to the St. Thomas Tower and the Peace Garden itself. I heard from Councillor Carl Rice today via this e-mail.
"Dear Jennifer
I so sorry - I thought I had notified everyone who contacted me about this issue. I am delighted to say that all the work to the Peace...
Hi Horsencart:
I had a look around and found a couple of connections including a photo of the garage at l Mansfield Road. A lovely heritage Grade II listed building by all accounts. Looks as though a couple of members of the Leonard family carried on the business which is now in Solihull. Here...
Hi Betty: I remember Pattisons Restaurant. It was on the corner of Corporation and Fore Street. I went to school at Lawrence's College across the road so
looked out at it a lot. I can't say I ever went inside and perhaps someone else will know about the entertainment they used to have. In later...
Not at all Rupert. I love to listen to BBC Radio 2 shows when online as they play some great music on their shows. Thanks for posting Jim. A great mixture of songs.
Hi Viv: Here is a site with quite a few photos of how some of the rooms used to look in the Grand Hotel. IMHO the reopening of the Grand Hotel will be a huge event
for the citizens of Birmingham especially those who fought tirelessly to save the building and bring it back to life...
El, according to this article from a couple of years ago the Grand Hotel will be rated a five star hotel. https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Grand+Hotel+set+for+five-star+rebirth%3B+EXCLUSIVE.-a0276317637 Could have changed but I very much doubt it.
Phil, there is a mention on a route table within Robert Darlaston's great site on Birmingham Trams that mentions Great Lister Street for the No. 7
https://www.robertdarlaston.co.uk/Trams.htm
Haven't been able to access the Horton's update photos but it's great to see El's photo of the hotel all wrapped up. It will be a great day in Brum when the hotel finally reopens. Can you imagine if it had been demolished? It was a close shave but here we are today and it will be more than...
Exactly right Bernard. I had a go at being a "Pen Striker" when I visited the Pen Museum. The set up is excellent although I can't imagine how those ladies
managed to do that job day after day. Kudos to them and for a small wage as well.
Hi AustinK2: I remember John Cobb and his triumphs followed by his sad death in Scotland. Here's a link to his racing in Utah. I expect that is where he picked up the salt crystal to give to your Father. A lovely gesture from a great driver...
