    Peter Walker Memorial Day

Time flies and we are remembering dear Peter once again. I too miss him very much and have some wonderful memories of my trip to London to stay with Peter and his wife Barbara. Also, his visit to Birmingham when I was visiting. He took me along the canal off Newhall Street explaining the...

Links to a photo of Mr. J. C. Holder and details of his baronetcy. Not too much obvious information on him that I could find or any article about the opening game at BCFC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holder_baronets...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

I remember coming down Hunton Hill from Gravelly Hill Station every work night in the late 1950's when I worked at New Street Station and caught the diesel into work and back every day. The buildings with the gables at the bottom of the hill had some nice shops in them in those days. It was a...

Worried about the Red Lion, Handsworth, and the Waterloo, Smethwick

Thanks for posting Viewfinder. Your post reminded me of articles I saw in the late 1990's regarding the stealing of complete pub interiors in Birmingham. Martin Mulleney said at that time that he thought the interiors were being stolen to order and shipped overseas. The pubs you mention...

    Josiah Mason's Orphanage

The white house is Rookery House, former Council House for Erdington. Not sure if it's Spring Lane or Western Road in the photo. Someone else might know Rookery House is still standing but is deteriorating fast due to no funds to maintain it. If it gets demolished yet another heritage Erdington...

    Sarehole Mill

Hi Gensec: According to several references about JJR Tolkien's life at 264 Wake Green Road. The house was initially owned by a wealthy Birmingham solicitor named A.H. Foster. Mr. Foster had the house built for his servants. He and his family were living close by in a much larger residence...

    Roll of Honour WW1

Here in Vancouver Remembrance Day/Armastice Day is observed on November 11th. It is a provincial day off in British Columbia. I hate to call it a holiday. Not all of Canada's provinces have the day off on November 11th. There is a 21 gun salute in Stanley Park at 11:00am and usually, weather...

    Roebuck Erdington

Thanks for the pics Dave. Doesn't seem to change much in recent years. Here is the photo of the National School as promised. I used to go there some Sundays for classes when the Church House was being used for something other than Sunday School. This would have been in the early 1950's. It was...
