    Woolworths Memories

Kings Heath Woolies had a sort of tandem machine, one side was peanuts and the other held hot cashews. I loved the cashews, still do !

    Wh Smith

We've got a seperate post office and WH Smith's here in Sandbach too. The Post Office has three windows and is busy, whereas Smith's seems to be in decline. No doubt amazon and particularly kindle, is responsible for that.

Dentistry past and present in Brum

Further to my personal tales of dental woe. Around 1953, when I was about 12, my Dad took me to a dentist in Kings Heath. This fool attempted to extract a tooth but broke it instead. I was sent home with a broken tooth and spent a weekend in agony before being taken back to have the job done...

    Chip shops

There was a great chippy in Highters Heath Rd., when I was in my youth, called Everetts. The best of it was my kid brother worked there, so I got my fish 'n chips buckshee !

    Tower Cliveland Street

That's the sort of tower I was thinking of but the Chester one looks distinctly Victorian.

    Tower Cliveland Street

I'm inclined to agree Eric. I've seen a shot tower in Chester and that is a stand-alone building.

    First Jobs

And then you joined the army mate. I bet you were more use to your country than that lot were and I bet you had more self pride.

    Call the Midwife

'Er Indoors watches CTM and likes it more than I do. I do have one eye on it though, for the gorgeous Trixie, played by Helen George. Unlike Smudger, who will, no doubt find himself marking time for going off thread, I keep out of trouble because Helen is a Brummie !

    Royal Coronations : Birmingham response

I remember it being a cold wet day, with most of the grownups staring at an interminable cermony on the telly. We would shout in to them, "ennythin' 'appnin?" to which would come the reply "noooo !". A stage was set up in our road and a bored - looking dance troupe, (Betty Barnes I think) did a...

    First Jobs

Left school at 15 and was employed by B'ham co-op as a trainee manager (errand kid) in No 6 Grocery, on Moseley road. Left to join the army at sixteen and a half.

    Moseley Letter Box

Looks like a nice big house, I bet he's got friends in high places. I wonder how long it will be before he gets that grey utilities box shifted too ?

    Birmingham Co-operative Society's annual vehicle parade 1927

Fantastic film ! There's so much to see for vintage vehicle enthusiasts and historians. Considering the year the film was made, the Hall of Memory looked like it had been there for a hundred years.

County Chemicals 'Chemico' County Perfumery Bradford Street

Yes, I remember the pink cleaning paste, less messy than Vim. It had a nice smell too.

County Chemicals 'Chemico' County Perfumery Bradford Street

I remember once when the Brylcreem machine in Kings Heath baths developed a fault and dispensed the stuff without money being inserted. It wasn't long before the news got out and all the kids were running around plastered in the stuff.

    Disgusting food

I remember Huss and Rock Salmon when I lived in SE London, in the late 70s. I'd never heard of it but accepted it because it was what the natives ate. It was OK. Do chippies in Brum still serve Roe ?
