    Guildford Street Lozells

Blimey! I reckon Tony was around 18yrs old back then and I looked up to him. I thought he was really cool ( remember Kookie in 77 Sunset Strip). I myself went to the Proof House many times. Unfortunately, Tony's Dad didn't like us as we were always messing about in that entry. Many a time he'd...

    Guildford Street Lozells

Thanks for your comments BOB1, I guess that explains the dereliction. I'm still wondering why that was the only house in the street with columns either side of the front door. Incidently, I don't know if the Woolaway family lived there in 1960 but, I too knew one of the sons. Before I left...

    Guildford Street Lozells

During the period 1959-61, our gang used to hang around my friends house at No175. I always wondered why No181 was derelict. It stood out from the rest of the houses because it had a posh front door with columns either side. You can see it on photo #613. Another odd thing was that No179 had...

    Newtown Row shops

Sorry about confusion, it was the new Shareholders where our wedding reception was held in Feb 1967.

    Newtown Row shops

Yes Lyn, the building that is there today was the Shareholders in 1967. Not sure when the original pub was demolished.

    Newtown Row shops

So very true Lyn. My home patch roughly covered Six Ways to Asylum Rd and Victoria Rd/Potters Hill through to Wheeler St. Apart from the Barton Arms, the Shareholders pub building (wedding reception in 1967), St Paul's church and my old Gower St school building on Lozells Rd, absolutely...

    Newtown Row shops

Thank you all for the comments. I should have added that my Dad was a barman at the Waggon & Horses in 1959. I spent many a Saturday afternoon in the snug after it had closed waiting for my Dad to finish. Most times, enjoying a Monk's pork pie and a glass of pop.

    Newtown Row shops

As I wrote last year, when I uploaded the Six Ways video, I've made some panoramic image videos of Aston using public domain photos. I did this for my kids & Grandkids to see what it was like for me growing up. This one of "Newtown Row" shops in High St was a bit trickier. Using research and...

John, you seem to be using the same post on two different threads. I answered your question yesterday on the Guilford St Lozells thread

Hi John, I left in March 1961 so, the only one in your photo I recognise is Mr Williams on the left. I couldn't help but notice the two other teachers though. Are they twins or do they just bear a lot of similarities?

    Our childhood toys

In the mid 50s I had a real tin helmet and an real army belt. Can't remember who gave them to me but, with my plastic machine gun, I was always fighting "the jerries" with my pals. These days I am a 1940s re-enactor but I don't engage the enemy any more.

    Art Deco buildings

My son lives in Viceroy Close where each block has a carving of a face over the entrance. This block isn't the one he lives in, but I must take a photo next time I visit.

    Black Country Museum

I have great memories of being at BCLM over the past few years. On one of the 1940s weekends, I was "the Proprietor" of this shop. The photo of King George VI admiring my broom has a special place in my scrapbook.

I'm pretty certain there were many of them around, but the only milk vending I ever saw & used was identical to this one outside a shop next to the Beaufort Arms pub in Hamstead around 1958. That lad could have been me, but obviously it's not.

Reading someone mention a drinking fountain on another thread, I wondered if the one we used on Coleshill Rd was still there. It is, but I doubt it still works. Me & my mate used it as a halfway point as we cycled on our fishing trips to Coleshill back in 1960. Apologies if this photo has been...

    Six Ways Aston

I'm hoping that members will find this interesting. A couple of years ago I decided to make a DVD photographic record of Aston for my kids to see where we lived back then. Along with photos, I made a video image of Whitehead St which I have already posted to the Forum. That made me think that...

Who'd have known then that this would look a similar sight (apart from the uniforms) in our shopping areas 60 years on.
