    Sparkhill Baths

I learned to swim at Monument Rd baths and earned my first free pass there. As we moved around Birmingham I used many different baths including Sparkhill,Grove Lane,Stechford and Tudor Grange. However I recall going swimming from Icknield St school but I can't remember where. Anyone help...

    Radio

Despite living in Edgbaston my Dad loved the shipping forecast and listened to it avidly. To my knowledge the only time he was near the sea was crossing the Channel to go to war and again on the way back. His twin was in the Royal Navy perhaps they were in sympathy with each other. Or maybe he...

Humorous And Interesting Newspaper Stories about Birmingham

Was it wearing a hat? ;) tall stovepipe-style hat, similar to a top hat, or the capotain. It is still worn by women, and particularly schoolgirls, in Wales on St David’s Day, but rarely on other occasions.

Bournville Village open air swimming pool

Spent many happy hours at this pool mid sixties with my bestest mate ever ;Geoffrey. I recall making skimmers from five ice lolly sticks and skimming them across the pool. I seem to remember a huge diving board from which I never had the nerve to dive, jumping from it was scary enough. Happy...

    Farm street infants and juniors.

Hi Terry, thank you very much for your reply. So sorry to hear your sister passed away at such an early age. Though I recall the Nativty I really can't recall much else. Susan was probably the first girl I put my arm around! The only name that I recognise from your list is Gerald Burgess. I...

    Pubs Of The Past

Sure do. In my very limited time as a trainee electrician I helped install the electrics and lighting. Also saw all the victorian objects installed. If I remember correctly there was free or very cheap beer available for anyone working there. I was forbidden by my boss to partake as I was only...

    Home Guard

Oddly several members of the photograph appear to be wearing sunglasses. If they are, anyone any idea why? I doubt if they are civilian glasses but may have been issued for some reason. NoddK-D,the curious.

    Air raid shelters

Just read that article. Interestingly Eunice Essex mentions Circular Road backing onto Dolphin Lane. I lived in 45 Circular Rd where according to our neighbour the rockery was made from the roof of an air raid shelter. I wonder if it was the one mentioned by Eunice? As an aside our neighbours...

I should hope not. The rebuilding may never be completed but Birmingham will never be 'finished'. With BHF around no-one would dare.:D:D Keep up the good work Brummies.:innocent: NoddKD
