Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

Sometime during the pandemic and financial crisis a lot of vaguely charitable organisations set up free kitchens around here. There is such a thing as a free lunch. I enjoy torturing a lot of those fake message people. I have strung out some of those "we are getting messages from your computer"...

Scams: telephone, email, texts 2023, 2024

Something I've seen lately on Facebook was a shared link to what seems to be a bitcoin seller disguised as a page from the Mirror. I reported it to Facebook, thinking the faked newspaper page alone would trip their alarms but they say it's OK. I notice that FB doesn't seem to take notice of this...

    Bankrupt Birmingham!

For years we have known that most computer projects will run massively over time and over budget. The larger they are and the further they drift from the initial specification the worse it will get. With a council system you have several hundred bosses each of whom will probably want it to do...

    Yesterday’s prices…today?

Some of that is that prices have gone up across the board over the years but some of it is also about new technology. Colour TV broadcasts only really started in 1969. Around the same time there was a switch from VHF to UHF (something else you needed a new TV for). The colour sets would have had...

    Birmingham Cinemas

I know I'd been to the Cinephone at least once - they were running Straw Dogs and Death Weekend as a double bill. Mostly they seemed to run European subtitled stuff so it got a reputation for "blue" films because of that. What they were showing was more of the stuff the papers said was awful and...

Floppy Disc - Erdington Cottage Homes Evacuation

There are ways to get pictures off of Word docs. Open the doc in Word and save it as Html. there may be two options on this but at least one of them should work. The file you get will probably have a new folder which should have the picture files in it. Unless you know somewhere that has old...

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

There's been a lot of signage calling this the Camp Hill line but it seems unlikely that there will be a Camp Hill station. The site of the old one is currently being redeveloped into blocks of housing. There's nothing else on that section of the line that has anything like an old station left...

    Student Outer Circle Bed Race

Birmingham carnival was a massive event in the 60s. It started sometime in the previous century and had grown to the point that they had concerts with big names in a lot of the city centre venues for around a fortnight. The parade was massive and ran from the university all the way through the...

Its good to know some old buildings are being used and not destroyed

If you're going to be in town either tomorrow afternoon or on 1st July, you might want to do the tour. You will have to book on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-exchange-heritage-building-tour-tickets-604997141737 but it is free.

    Radio

https://www.radioechoes.com/?page=series&genre=OTR-SciFi&series=Journey%20Into%20Space According to the listings, that should have all series including the 80s revival for stream or download. They have a solid archive of old shows although they are mostly American.

Blitz themed walk around Moseley - Saturday 17/6/23

In case you hadn't realised the times should be 11:30 am and 3:30 pm. This is not happening in the early hours of the morning.

    Barry Humphries

I have an old Private Eye collection from the 60s with a few of the old Barry McKenzie strips in and managed to turn up the films on the internet a while back. I think I'd seen both at the cinema back in the 70s. Humphries is credited as writer on all of this stuff and it seems that McKenzie's...

    EASTER MEET UP DIRECTIONS

According to Travelodge's website https://www.travelodge.co.uk/uk/west-midlands/birmingham/index.html there are 5 hotels that they call Birmingham central. None of them are particularly far from Price Street which is where you want to get to. Because of the closeness and the fact that the buses...

    Computer help

I don't use either Classic Shell or Open Shell (which has apparently replaced it) but this is the download site for Open Shell https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/ and this is a page about making adjustments if it doesn't work https://www.minitool.com/news/open-shell-windows-11.html

    Typhoo Tea Factory plans

As I remember the plans, the shell of the building will stay as it is although I think the back of the building on the ground floor is currently under ground. The rest is likely to be demolished and rebuilt to create something more open plan. From the look of the pictures, they plan on putting...

    Historical directories

https://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp has now been taken over by some poker/gambling site. Add to that the browser is putting up warnings about it. Safest not to use it now.

    Typhoo Tea Bordesley Street Digbeth

As I've said before, that half of the building was in regular used from 1982-2001 (I worked there at the time) and the other half seems to be still in use by a college.

What happened to Ernest Dryche Photography Birmingham?

I'm not sure when Ernest Dyche died but his son Malcolm retired in 1989, donated all of the photos to Birmingham Library and died in 1991. Considering Birmingham Libraries have held exhibitions of the work using derived images. That's probably the best place to ask about copyright.

    Moseley Kings Heath Line

Camp Hill is somewhere on the Highgate side of Highgate Road by Moseley Road. The King Edwards Camp Hill school used to be there before they decided that was the place to put a freight yard/station. The school moved to Kings Heath but never changed its name. Around that time there was also a...

    Comics

Curious thing about the Beano artist is that there were others that worked on the same strips before (and, presumably, after) that get the same credit in their biography. Here's an example https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/apr/30/leo-baxendale-obituary
