The Victorian Slum 9 Oclock Bb2

The arrival of the Irish brother and sister (who was wearing false eyelashes!!) was interesting. My grandfather and family came over in 1900, and already had relatives in Birmingham who had come over before, so I assume had work to go to. In the programme, the pair arrived with no money at all...

    Greys Department Store

I didn't spend as many hours in Greys as I did in Lewis's, but looking at the photos, wish I'd explored it more. Lewis's always seemed more interesting and organised. Was there a young person's clothes department in Greys called Way In? Or am I thinking of another shop?

The Victorian Slum 9 Oclock Bb2

It was interesting. Did the children really have nothing to eat all day? If so, how safe or ethical was that? The man with the amputated leg was really brave to use a "Victorian" one. And the man who did his back in....

    Clothes & shoes of yesteryear

Braces don't seem popular theses days. Perhaps there's an association with red braces as worn by Yuppies in the 1980s?

    Clothes & shoes of yesteryear

Richie, I think I can remember shoes like that. I had to look up the trousers becasue I hadn't heard of the label, and found this: https://www.soul-source.co.uk/soulforum/topic/44014-fashion-victims/?page=2 Does that sound right? I've seen programmes about Northern Soul, and was very impressed...

    Clothes & shoes of yesteryear

My son wears black jeans, the sort that look a bit like footless tights. Being tall, like Eddie, he can carry them off! Recently I've seen a couple of programmes from the 1970s, where the men are wearing flared trousers and platform-soled shoes, a look which I'd forgotten. Did anyone wear loons...

    Jeremy Brett

Yes, his Holmes was very eccentric and strange. I didn't know about the bi-polar disorder, and he seems to have had a difficult life in many ways. We're currently watching him in "Rebecca" (only available on YouTube), which is what made me look him up.

    Jeremy Brett

His mother was a Cadbury, and his first school was in Balsall Common (sounds like a small private school). https://www.jeremybrett.info/factfile.html Maria

    Prepared.

    That sounds terrifying!

    Prepared.

I've seen 1950s films that mention Civil Defence, and it puzzled me, so that's useful. ("The Quatermass Experiment" and one of the "angry young men" films from novels, but I can't recall which one!)

    Woman's Hour Serial This Week

I've only heard the odd minute, but it seems to be about an Edwardian vegetarian man who is walking from Land's End to John O'Groats (or the other way round) to promote the vegetarian way of life. In this morning's episode, the Birmingham Vegetarian Association was mentioned, which as a...

Growing Up In Brum - Roy Blakey Inspired.

In Garrison Lane Park there was a long horse with several seats, in front of each seat a metal handle, which went backwards and forwards. It wasn't a rocking horse, that is. The horse's head was made of iron, or some kind of metal. At either side was a wooden platform for your feet.

    Auntie Cakes

The Auntie and Granny Cakes make nice memories, which I don't think "clean eating" will.

Oh dear, they sound more like rusks!!

    Auntie Cakes

My great-aunt in Stechford was always known as Auntie. (Her husband was always known as Uncle. I don't know why). She often used to make small cakes with coconut, or coconut fairy cakes. When my nephew was little, he used to call them "Auntie cakes." Did anyone else have a relative who gave...

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

They are very fine costumes. I wonder if they hired them from the Rep?

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

Thanks, Viv, the history of vegetarianism is very interesting. I like the names of the products as well! maria

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

I've got a feeling that someone (Mike?) said on a thread ages ago that, relating to something I'd mentioned, there was a vegetarian restaurant around there. Aplogies if I've got that wrong, Mike. maria
