    Moseley Kings Heath Line

I don't know if this is an official name but the above article shows the first time that I have heard this line being called the South Birmingham Line

    Curzon Street Railway Station

Can you give us more details please as this sounds as if it might be the viaduct from Bordesley which was never completed.

    Christ Church New Street

Yes that is a three tier pulpit but the stairs look very steep to me. What is puzzling me is its position central in an apse. I would have to ask where is the alter? In a CofE parish church of that time I would have expected the alter to be back against the eastern wall. As you say it does look...

    New Street Station From 1854 - 1966

Yes that is Navigation Street on the other side of the station and the trams are in Hill Street heading out for the Bristol Road services

Scouts Cubs Boys Brigade Girl Guides Brownies

The main event in August 1957 was held in Sutton Park but there were satellite camping sites around the Birmingham area for British scouts.

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

I am trying to workout where that Harborne canal scene would have been painted. My guess is that it would possibly be near Stonehouse Lane in what is now called Old Quarry Park where the Dudley No. 2 Canal emerged from the Lapal Tunnel. That is assuming that St Peter's church would have been...

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

I know this is not Birmingham but I thought it would be of interest to see how changing from manual to automatic was described back in 1934. Taken from the Didcot Railway Centre Facebook page. What is interesting was that even if you make an automatic call from within Paddington Station you...

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

The numbers were allocated to areas of the city. Central Birmingham had numbers in the 200 and 600 series allowing CEN and MID to keep their numbers North East Birmingham had numbers in the 300 series South West Birmingham had numbers in the 400 series allowing HAR to keep it numbers North West...

    Canals of Birmingham

I was brought up in Oldbury where the canals were always open. People treated the towpaths as any other footpath so if that was the most convenient route then that was the way people walked. I was surprised to find that in Birmingham the canals were all sealed off with just Gas Street as the...

Telephone history: Telephone Service in Birmingham

The city centre was split between CENtral and MIDland with I think CITy and COLmore as overflow exchanges. My parents were on BEArwood and my first home on my own was on WOOdgate which was actually Quinton but there was no Q on the old dials.

    Harborne

Very Interesting. Do you know where it is now. One room from the Grove has been reconstructed in the V & A in London. Grove House was in what is now Grove Park, Harborne. Just being pedantic but in 1877 Harborne was in Staffordshire not Warwickshire.

    Lewis's Department Store

I think Uncle Holly was exclusive to Lewis's which in those days included Selfridges.

    Handsworth

Photo of 2 Charles Road from 2011 is available on Google Maps Street View. Although 133 Stamford Road exists it appears that a photo of it is not available on Google. Looks like the driver of the camera car went round by Stamford Grove and forgot to backtrack along Stamford Road.

    New Street Station From 1854 - 1966

The original Railway Police were the signallers. That is why signallers are always addressed as Bobby whatever their real names.

    New Street Station 1967 - 2014

I am extremely annoyed as my ticket reads as a perfectly valid admission ticket. There is no mention on it to say that it is a lottery or ballot ticket. This is a complete misdescription but I have no idea what we can do about it. As we have not lost any money, there is no point in complaining...
